Reince Priebus Leads First RNC Ballot [LIVE thread]
Roll Call ^ | 01/14/2011 | Kyle Trygstad

Posted on 01/14/2011 11:08:07 AM PST by iowamark

Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus led after the first ballot in the race for chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Needing 85 votes among the 168 members to win, Priebus took 45 votes in the first round. Trailing Priebus after one round is Chairman Michael Steele with 44 votes, former RNC official Maria Cino with 32 votes, Michigan Committeeman Saul Anuzis with 24 votes, and former Missouri GOP Chairwoman Ann Wagner with 23 votes.

Several more ballots are expected before someone reaches the 85-vote threshold. Steele won the 2009 race after six rounds, defeating a five-candidate field that included Anuzis and then-Chairman Mike Duncan.

All eyes are now on Steele to see if his support begins to dwindle. In 2009, Duncan dropped out after three rounds after watching his vote total dwindle from 52 to 44. He had led after the first round and was tied with Steele after the second round.

The sense here is that if Steele did not finish in first place after the first ballot, he would have a difficult chance of winning. Still, much of the talk among members before this vote centered on whether Steele would leave the race when it became apparent he could not win...

Yeah, but the others probably have more experience and demonstrated prowess with the grassroots too. Priebus will be the Barbours’ butt boy, but the Barbours are very good at politics—they may get a fair amount of his work done for him.

And some of it is just ignorance or arrogance.

I once lived in Austin, TX and on more than one occasion was asked where I was originally from. When I told the questioner I was originally from Milwaukee, invariably their next query was "So, how did you like growing up in Minnesota?"

If I bothered to correct the Texan, I was usually told that "if it's north of the Red River, it's really not that important down here."

Culturally, Wisconsin is quite a bit closer to the South than it is to the Northeast.

I’d much rather have Priebus than that awful Ann Wagner and Cino should drop out altogether. What a witch. She would attract.....?

Reince Priebus is a Haley Barbour “hack”......I like Haley but the deal was struck behind close doors weeks ago to push Reince so that Haley can control the RNC to position himself as he runs for President

The inetersting thing is that the South may hold the key to defeating the Obama crowd and his leftists. DeMint and also the Texas crowd seem to have formed a solid nucleus or rally point politically. The Texans agreed to vote agaist Steele as a block, and surely that must have been very influential on other delegates.

There just wasn’t a strong Southerner in the mix though. Curious.

You may be right about that, but if so, there will be some serious fur flying, we will likely have a dozen presidential candidates.

If Preibus is aligned with the Tea Party, just how does Haley plan on doing this?

I confess, I’m out of the informed-picture on this. I will have to trust my fellow FReepers on this.

I’d rather see a Barbour RINO run the RNC than any of the other RINO dipsticks running. The debate showed just how moronic they all are.

Now that we’ve lost Steele, I wish they’d hurry it up and give it to Barbour... er Plebius or whatever the man’s name is.

Reince really doesn’t have much of a record on fundraising

Well, as a guy from Wisconsin who would have historically rather cut off a limb than give money to the National or State Level GOP, Reince put together a team of candidates here in Wisconsin (Scott Walker, Ron Johnson, etc) that convinced me to drop some serious coin in '10. He was down there in the trenches up to the last night wringing cash out of a lot of people I know.

All of the choices for RNC Chair have problems, so the RNC loses, no matter who wins. That’s the message I’m getting.
