Boy, 9, has Disney World trip ruined after US immigration rules him a threat

A nine-year-old boy's dream trip to Disney World was ruined when US immigration officials ruled he was a threat.

Civil servants Kathy and Edward Francis planned to surprise their grandson Micah Strachan with the holiday of a lifetime to Florida in February.

They were only going to tell Micah about it when they took him to the airport on February 19 for the flight to the US.

They had already spent more than £1,500 on plane tickets and had been organising the trip for months.

But this week US Embassy officials denied the schoolboy a visa to enter the US.

They said there was a risk he would not leave the US at the end of his holiday and refused his application under Section 214 (b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Micah was born in Britain and has lived in Middlesex all his life with his mum Claudia Lewis.

He holds a South African passport because his grandparents Kathy and Edward, who have lived and worked in Britain since 1990, only got him a South African passport.

They are originally from South Africa. A letter from Micah's primary school was included in his visa application confirming he attended the school.

But the US Embassy's rejection letter to Micah said: "Because you either did not demonstrate strong ties outside the United States or were not able to demonstrate that your intended activities in the US would be consistent with the visa status, you are ineligible."

His grandmother Kathy, from Brixton, South London, said: "It was going to be a total surprise. He would have loved it.

Wow, that was close call wasn't it? I can't tell you how often I encounter nine-year-old kids who came the US with grandparents and then refused to leave, becoming a drain on the us and our resources.

It's so nice to know the system works from time to time. Now, if we just can figure out how to extend this exemplary performance to those who should keep a 22-year-old schizophrenic from getting a handgun we can all sleep better.

If he lived in Mexico, wouldn’t be a problem at all.

Walk on over...

I presume this boy was white South African originally, or they’d have let him in.

OTOH, England has no good reason to complain, since they have been arbitrarily excluding Americans and others for being too conservative.

et if this kid was named Manuel Ortega from Mexico...or Malik bin Laden...he would have been allowed in with no questions.

This kid was discriminated against because he had an Anglo sounding name. You can bet on that with the racists in the US government

Demonstrates that government is incapable of rational and humane actions. This is precisely why the Founders limited the scope of government. Free people cannot tolerate a nanny state.

Who is this ‘England’ of which you speak? We are all individuals, and not the policies of our respective governments... With that in mind, I as an Englishman think this decision was stupid. Although, if he had a British passport, he wouldn’t have needed to apply for a Visa to enter the US...

Yes, this particular case seems to be a mistake. However,it is good to know the Embassy is taking precautions to limit who has access to the US. They have a track record of being far too lenient.

I congratulate them and hope they get even tougher.
