CBS News poll finds that Americans strongly prefer cutting spending to raising taxes to reduce the federal deficit. While 77 percent prefer to cut spending, just nine percent call for raising taxes. Another nine percent want to do both.

Naive thought of the day: just cut 10% from everything, across the board. It may not be the answer, but it would be a good start.
About the same number that were against obamacare, in other words.
Translation: Most everyday people are anxious to see government spending slashed but statist liberals and their adoring press are not among them.
15% Across the board... then totally defund EPA, Depts of Education, Commerce, FDA, USDA (which has more employees than the farmers it’s supposed to regulate)
then another 10% across the board just for good measure...
then commission for Strictest Constitutionality of every other govt Program ... and defund accordingly
nine percent call for raising taxes
20% across the board. The bureaucrats need to feel ECONOMIC PAIN. They get high salaries to MANAGE. It’s about time they EARN their keep.
Not really naive. It is so far out of control the method needs to be to make every expense fought for. Sure, there will be some problems in the short term until we dind out what really needs money but we will survive.
It has become so bad that underspending is better than continuing.
Add to the across the board spending cuts targeted cuts of whole programs. This will make the survivors work harder.
This kind of spending cut program is what is done in the real world. The results can be devastating but the company survives and is mostly stronger.
On top of this series of cuts change the way agencies budget. Reward them for saving not for spending as is done now. Agencies have to spend all their budget this year to just stay even next year. This is insane and has a predictable outcome of ever rising cost.
I wonder why raising tariffs is never included as an option?
No-doubt the percentage of people responding to the poll who don't pay any taxes. Go ahead, raise someone else's taxes...pay me! {snort}
I say cut everything the feds do not have strict Constitutional authority. Not 10%, not 15%, cut it, completely, 100% de-fund. If it is something that really needs to get done, someone will start a business and do it. If they screw up, someone else will come in and take their market away from them. In the end, we get only the services we need, more efficient services, and employment and economic growth.
The leftist “National Labor Relations Board” would also be a great place to smack with the axe.
“Naive thought of the day: just cut 10% from everything, across the board. It may not be the answer, but it would be a good start.”
Cut any program whose regulations are confiscatory.
The FAA has more employees than there are airplanes too.
None of those nine percent currently pay any taxes, so they would be unaffected by any increase. We are closing in on the point where a majority of the population pays no taxes, thus turning taxpayers into a slave class. The majority will always vote for both spending increases and tax increases. They are the beneficiaries of the former and are unaffected by the latter.
For a start Just Freeze spending right Now,then close the dept Of Education,Dept of Energy, then Cancel all Global warming Studies, defund NPR 100%
Start with the agencies- defund them, abolish many. The EPA and Dept of Educ can go immediately. Repeal all protections for the unions- the taxpayer will no longer be responsible for their benefit packages. End grants to the arts and NPR. No more grants to university “research”. Abolish all government “corporations”.
See? Easy!
I support tax cuts and spending cuts. Taxes need to drop by $500B a year, while federal spending needs to drop by $2T a year. Cut everything that’s been added since 2006, then we can look at specifics on where we should cut deeper.
Absolutely the right way to go. How about 25% across the board.
And while they are at it, perhaps they can consolidate the 69 separate “early education” programs run by 9 different agencies into one. Better yet, end all the “early education” crap — 40 years of it has done nothing but create a much larger dependent class. Let people fend for themselves instead of becoming dependent serfs. We would all be much better off.
