How do we know that grade-school students in Dallas spontaneously cheered the news that President John F. Kennedy was murdered in their city?
Because it's been repeated ad infinitum for almost half a century. Therefore it must be true, right?
It's a belief that's taken on the aura of holy writ to liberals, thanks to propapandists like radio host and lawyer Mike Papantonio in preserving its mythology for each new generation of true believers.
You'd think someone who practices law would know better. Then again, you might not.
Appearing on Ed Schultz's radio show Thursday, "Ring of Fire" radio program co-host Papantonio talked about President Obama's remarks at the Tucson memorial service and drew a parallel between current-day political rancor and the toxic divisions of the early 1960s --
PAPANTONIO: As I listened to him, I remembered something, though. I remembered that hate is like ink in water in the way it spreads. And I wish, you know, I know he had to be careful on the way that he dealt with this issue, but it's an important issue. And that is the way hate spreads. I think about the 1960s. You had right-wing billionaires fueling hatred against John F. Kennedy, the same way, I mean exactly, Ed, the same way they're doing it today. You had, crowd hatred doesn't just happen, it usually takes money to egg it on. And that's what we saw in the '60s with John F. Kennedy. When Secret Service, Ed, begged Kennedy not to go to Dallas, it's because they feared for his life. It wasn't because they expected a Lee Harvey Oswald-type of assassination.

I was in grade school in a small town outside of Corpus Christi, Texas when JFK was killed. I remember our teacher making us put our heads down on our desk while she cried. I remember, as a third grader, we really didn’t understand the magnitude of the event, only that it must be great, due to our teacher crying. I do not remember anyone being happy, just the opposite. We knew someone, our president, had been killed. The schools were closed and we were sent home for the rest of the week.
The citizen with a gun that helped subdue Loughner last week in Tucson "could have shot the wrong person" except that he didn't.
JFK "could have been killed by a right-winger" except that he wasn't.
RFK "could have been killed by a right-winger" except that he wasn't either.
Reagan "could have started a nuclear war with the Soviet Union" except that he didn't.
Christians "could be as murderous as Muslims" except that they aren't.
Socialism "could work if given a chance" except that it never has in spite of dozens of nations trying it.
Concealed firearms permits "could result in a bloodbath" except that the opposite happens.
0bambi "could be a natural born citizen" except that he hasn't proved it.
0bambi "could be really smart" except that all his school records are sealed.

Personally, I don't know that he did, but I do know that when the Interstate 635 "Loop" was named LBJ Freeway, folks in other parts of the country seized on that to say, "see? they make him [LBJ] a hero. they all hate JFK down there in bad 'ol Dallas..." or worse.
Schoolkids of that day didn't cheer. That is total horse-droppings, period. Conventional culture was far more polite then, than it is now. Along with there being one hellava lot more registered Democrats per percentage of population there in Dallas-Ft.Worth, than there is today, or so I get the impression.
All this stuff about schoolkids being happy about the Presidential assassination in '63 is less true [even!] than Jared the crazy-red-thong posing whack-job being influenced by Sara Palin (of all people, sheeshs) to go shoot people.
Meaning, it is utter & complete fabrication.
When I got home my Goldwater Republican mother was sitting in front of the TV crying her eyes out. I asked her "Why are you crying? You didn't even vote for him." She replied "Because he is our President." That is how most people were then. There was no joy anywhere in my neighborhood and it was probably a predominately Republican area.

Again it was radio I did not see Mr. Keillor's reaction to the audience's joy.. it must have been with somewhat disapproval however because the audience quieted down.
I do remember the day JFK was assassinated. Among the people I knew there were already jokes that day like "Well, Jack, besides that what did you think of the parade?"
.. but none was anything like delighted that it happened. No one had even imagined that it could happen. It happened.
I was in grade school 200 miles West of Dallas that day. We had just came back from lunch. I remember I was in the boys room when a buddy stuck his head in and yelled Kennedy had been shot. Nobody cheered. I remember we were all in shock. It was as if something bad was going to happen. When we got to our history class, our teacher Mr. Allen said yes, the president had been shot. Within seconds the principal came on the intercom and gave the shocking announcement. Immediately, girls in our class began wailing. Loudly. It echoed in unison from other classrooms. School was let out and when I got home I found my mother sitting on the floor in front of the tv crying. She did not like Kennedy. So to answer you’re question, nobody in West Texas cheered to my knowledge. We were all sad and frightened. What were the Russian’s going to do? We lived near a SAC base that went on full alert. If it came to war, our town was toast. Yeah, it was a long time ago, yet it remains very vivid in my mind. Bit of history. My dad did his internship at Parkland hospital. His buddy, Malcolm Perry was the attending phycisian for President Kennedy. Malcolm and dad died about five years ago.
Just finished Basic Training when the Cuban Mille Crisis came along. Was later stationed in SoCal then and after having to “Standby” for hours on-end in the hot sun at Palm Springs while JFK and Jackie meandered around did bring out a cheer from me when hearing the news.
He was a pompass ass who almost got us all nuked. Piss on him and every kennedy.
I was in Houston in elementary school at lunch and a kid who was often in the principal’s office rushed in to tell us. There was NO cheering but shock and sadness. When I got home I was surprised that my right wing mother was very sad because she had disliked JFK so much that she gave me anti-New Frontier coloring books! Now I understand that at a time like that, politics were forgotten.
At least early on I think most jokes were recycled Lincoln jokes.
I sure as heck didn't hear anyone cheer.
As a real little kid I understood that the President was shot but why was it was too dangerous to go out to play?

I remember sitting in my third grade classroom when an announcement was made. The teacher became real sad and said that school was to be closed and we were all to go home. We were confused and didn’t know what was going on so we walked home.

I, too, call BS. My father was a huge supporter of Nixon and did not like Kennedy in the least. However, after the assassination school was let out( I was in the seventh grade) and I remember riding my bike home, only to find my father already home sitting on the front steps. He was distraught over the assassination and was proud of me for being the same way. Conservatives are not evil, and we have the truest of human emotions. We want to beat the Progressives, but we want to do so at the ballot box and not through gun play.
When the movie ‘Independence Day’ came out, I saw it in the theaters. In the scene where the White House gets fried by the aliens, the entire auditorium (an evening crowd - full house) erupted in cheers. Remember, of course, that this film came out in the midst of the krinton reign. Seems the rabble is just as disposed to off the emperors as well as the media made conservative villains.
