Woman Accused of Animal Cruelty
East Valley Tribune ^ | Jan 18, 2011 | Mike Sakal

A 33-year-old Gilbert woman accused of putting her Shih Tzu dog in the trunk when she drove it to the vet in 110-plus degree heat in August was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of animal cruelty charges.

Authorities said the woman, Katie Troung, was observed pulling the dog out of the trunk of her car when she took it to a pet groomer in Queen Creek last August.

The groomer, who described the dog as “soaking wet” and “very dehydrated,” was concerned about its condition and took it to a nearby veterinarian for evaluation. The dog was found to have a body temperature of 103 degrees, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. It also had distressed breathing and was suffering from heat stress, according to information from the MCSO. It was not known how long the dog was in the trunk and whether placing it there was a common practice.

The dog is in the care of the Maricopa Animal Safe Haven (MASH) Unit for evidence and now is being cared for by jail inmates until Troung’s case is processed through the court.

Cannot determine from the article if the animal was the family pet, or future dinner.

Also can’t determine guilt or innocence. Something seems a bit... off.

Wait, this is animal cruelty. Never mind. Guilty.

People do this all the time because many animals freak out in a car and can cause an accident and cages won’t fit in many cars.

wth is also a sarcasm signifier,
I was agreeing with the poster that the story is BS since 103 isn’t a great elevation in temperature.

Some funny stuff here ... The story has the event in August and the arrest is 5 months later? For a dog 103f isn’t really a high temp ... I have big dogs ,, some dogs are good in cars and some aren’t .. if this one (even though it’s small) likes to climb on you while you’re driving the trunk isn’t a bad option for safety... The vast majority of cars with trunks circulate air through the trunk ,, cabin air usually exhausts from a car through the sides of the trunk down low.. air conditioned air would have been flowing there...

My Shih Tzu Charlie is the best dog i have ever owned.
He’s Smart, Cudly, fun loving, loves to play, a great companion, etc.
A good dog.

He just turned 11 last month.

Putting an animal in the truck of a car in 110 degrees is without a doubt animal cruelty, but dogs don’t sweat. Maybe she thought soaking the dogs fur would keep him cooler.
