A 33-year-old Gilbert woman accused of putting her Shih Tzu dog in the trunk when she drove it to the vet in 110-plus degree heat in August was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of animal cruelty charges.
Authorities said the woman, Katie Troung, was observed pulling the dog out of the trunk of her car when she took it to a pet groomer in Queen Creek last August.
The groomer, who described the dog as soaking wet and very dehydrated, was concerned about its condition and took it to a nearby veterinarian for evaluation. The dog was found to have a body temperature of 103 degrees, according to the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office. It also had distressed breathing and was suffering from heat stress, according to information from the MCSO. It was not known how long the dog was in the trunk and whether placing it there was a common practice.
The dog is in the care of the Maricopa Animal Safe Haven (MASH) Unit for evidence and now is being cared for by jail inmates until Troungs case is processed through the court.

I have two Shih Tzu’s - Maggie & Jake - and I would kick anyone’s ass who abused them this way....she needs to go to jail!
Also can’t determine guilt or innocence. Something seems a bit... off.
Wait, this is animal cruelty. Never mind. Guilty.
I call B.S. dogs don't sweat.
If it was black it was for dinner.
Oh, jeez, she was only trying to wok the dog!
That is what I was going to say.....when a dog starts getting heat exhaustion their tongue swells.
People do this all the time because many animals freak out in a car and can cause an accident and cages won’t fit in many cars.
More BS is that a dog’s normal temp can run 102. This dog had a blazing temperature of 103, wth...
Slow cooking is more tender than Woking a dog. I know these peeps.
“A normal temperature is from 101 degrees to 102.5 °F.”for a dog.Is someone trying to compare what a humans normal temperature is to a dogs to make a faulty case?
Ding Ding Ding
We got the winner!
Hello,”A normal temperature is from 101 degrees to 102.5 °F” for a dog.
wth is also a sarcasm signifier,
I was agreeing with the poster that the story is BS since 103 isn’t a great elevation in temperature.
Disregard post.Sorry.
In this case, the dog is not the bitch, the human is.
Some funny stuff here ... The story has the event in August and the arrest is 5 months later? For a dog 103f isn’t really a high temp ... I have big dogs ,, some dogs are good in cars and some aren’t .. if this one (even though it’s small) likes to climb on you while you’re driving the trunk isn’t a bad option for safety... The vast majority of cars with trunks circulate air through the trunk ,, cabin air usually exhausts from a car through the sides of the trunk down low.. air conditioned air would have been flowing there...
My Shih Tzu Charlie is the best dog i have ever owned.
He’s Smart, Cudly, fun loving, loves to play, a great companion, etc.
A good dog.
He just turned 11 last month.
I’m starting to get worried...
Putting an animal in the truck of a car in 110 degrees is without a doubt animal cruelty, but dogs don’t sweat. Maybe she thought soaking the dogs fur would keep him cooler.
