House begins probe into 222 waivers for ObamaCare
Hot Air ^ | January 20, 2011 | Ed Morrissey

Fred Upton proves himself to be a multitasker this week. Earlier today, I wrote about his plan to fight the EPA on the expansion of climate-change regulation, and now Upton has his eyes trained on Health and Human Services. Upton and one of the chairs of his Energy and Commerce subcommittees have launched a probe into the 222 waivers granted by the Obama administration from ObamaCare insurance coverage mandates:

One day after the House voted to repeal Obamacare, some lawmakers are turning their attention toward the bureaucracy created by the bill. Reps. Fred Upton, chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, and Cliff Stearns, chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, are investigating the new Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight (CCIIO).

On Thursday, Upton and Stearns sent CCIIO director Jay Angoff a letter with questions about the office’s structure, authority and recent decision to grant waivers throughout several industries, exempting companies from complying with the bill’s requirements.

“Most troubling is that your office is currently responsible for deciding who does not have to comply with the massive new regulations imposed by the PPACA [Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act],” said the letter. “Currently your office has approved waivers from the PPACA’s annual limits requirements for 222 applicants.”

According to the letter, Angloff told Rep. Michael Burgess that the administration had also denied some waiver requests, but apparently didn’t elaborate on who got denied and why. Upton and Stearns want an explanation of the processes and requirements for waivers from the PPACA. They are also likely looking at denied and approved waivers to determine whether there is a fair and objective process, or if political considerations went into granting the explosion of waivers.

I would love to see Upton lead an effort to repeal the wrongheaded legislation that bans the sale of incadescent light bulbs. What an idiot.

HA! Good for Upton. I doubt if they have any procedures in place for how those waivers were granted. This will open up more lawsuits into ObamaCare.

Good for them. If this healthcare is such a good deal; why are they allowing people to opt out? Why, because it causes envy and what better way to control.

Let’s start by revoking or getting injuctions in court to block all of these waivers. Watch the tide turn when the Rats who got in line for their special deal find out it’s no longer there and they’re going to be screwed just like everyone else.

How about outlawing the “water saving” 3 flush toilets?
I just replaced one that was about 8-10 years old ... which is also how many flushes it took to do the job.
The new one is so strong it could suck the chrome off a bumper hitch.
Even still, sometimes it still takes two flushes.

Long ago I read that, just like Romneycare in Massachusetts, the seat of Christian Science, that in OBAMACARE, all Christian Scientists are EXCEMPT, they do not *have* to buy insurance, they do not have to participate in ANY part of Obamacare, just like how in Romneycare, all Christian Scientists are 100% excempt.

Do you know anything about this?

What other religious groups do not HAVE to participate in Obamacare or Mitt-care?

For instance, is there one of those waivers for 'new age' faith healers?

There are groups...like the Mennonites which are exempted from ObamaCare.

Having grown up around the Mennonites...typically, they only take extremely serious cases to a clinic to be examined, and they pay cash. And no, they wouldn’t be signing up for heart transplants or any truly expensive procedures. The other side of this story is that they all eat healthy, do physical labor, and avoid alcohol, drugs, booze or activities which would be considered dangerous.

Waivers can be granted, subject of course to appropriate “considerations”.
