Four Detroit police officers were shot inside the Northwest District headquarters. The district office is located near Warwick and Plymouth and houses both the 6th and 8th precincts.
We're told a man walked into the lobby and opened fire with a shotgun during roll call at about 4:30 p.m. He was killed by police.
The injured officers were rushed to Detroit's Sinai Grace Hospital.
One of the officers is a commander, one is a patrolman, another is a clerk and the fourth is a lien officer. Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee has asked that their names not be shared until family members can be notified.
During a press conference, Chief Godbee updated reporters on the conditions of the officers.
"As a department we are very sobered by the events, but we are very relieved that it appears that all our officers are going to be OK," Chief Godbee said.
Police say a gunman walked into the station just as any citizen can do. They say the shooter walked past the desk and fired down a hallway hitting a female sergeant in the chest. The female officer was wearing a bulletproof vest. She was taken to the hospital and later released.
The gunman then fired a shot at a second officer, who is in the hospital being treated for a face wound. He is listed in serious condition.
A precinct commander then grabbed the wounded sergeants gun and exchanged shots with the gunman. The commander was then shot in the back. He underwent surgery and is listed in serious condition.
The gunman then jumped over a counter to attempt to shoot more officers. At that point, other officers opened fire, killing him.
Prayers for all concerned
dang TEA Partiers.

It’s starting to go non-linear. This is supposed to happen only in movies.
One thing they had better change is having their Precinct Commander being armed at all times. Somebody (him) got lax, and shot because he wasn’t.
Fort Apache
Disgruntled employee? Had a serious beef with the police (maybe they took his crack)? Just another nut who listened to too much rightwing radio? Will they find pictures of Palin at his home?
So many questions.
At least the perp is dead.
Now they can blame Palin and Beck and the Tea Party with no one to prove them wrong.
“At least the perp is dead.”
I can hear the lamentations of the lawyers all the way down in the Everglades.
This horrible event also shows why everyone who knows how to handle a firearm (and who is not mentally ill or a felon or ex-felon) should be armed. Only four officers shot and why? Because the people he was shooting were shooting back.
It wasn’t a gun-free zone?
Not gun free, but at least nuclear free. That was close.
>>Disgruntled employee? Had a serious beef with the police (maybe they took his crack)? <<
Or maybe a cop had killed his dog and he’d decided, “No more.”
Thanks
it was reported that they police have not released his name or description yet. If true why not?
I see the corrupt biased media are not covering this important story like they did with AZ.
