NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Losing weight is often touted as a way to improve health, but many weight-loss programs may not help stave off disease since people tend to gain the weight back, Australian researchers say.
In a report in the International Journal of Obesity, they note the focus of such programs may need to change if they're really going to have a lasting effect.
To test the potential impact of different diets, the researchers ran two computer simulations: One included a low-fat diet, the other a diet rich in whole grains and vegetables plus 180 minutes of exercise per week.
According to the models, people lost an average of 8 to 12 pounds on the diets and kept the weight off for an average of 6 months. But the pounds slowly crept back on, and after less than 6 years, the dieters were back where they started -- negating any improvement in health from the weight loss.
In addition, the researchers estimate that only about 3 percent of Australia's population would participate in weight-loss programs.
"Interventions that try to change the behavior of individuals but do nothing about the environment in which these people live, are likely to have modest and temporary effects at best," said study author Lennert Veerman, who studies population health at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.
"They are not the solution for the obesity epidemic -- more, and different, interventions have to be taken," he added in an e-mail to Reuters Health.
Along with continued counseling to help people keep weight off long-term, Veerman suggests a 'junk food tax' and better nutrition labeling. These did seem to have an overall positive effect on health in a parallel study, published in November in the same journal.

This hits home, my doc says I need to lose weight and exercise, eat better. I can actually own that it needs to go.. I been carrying ample fat for far too long as is.. hops fortified
I need to lose 20 pounds in 6 months so I can get around on the ground on a Med cruise.

Men lose easier than women because you have a higher muscle mass to begin with (well, most men vs most women). I gave up all sugar months ago, and switched to whole grains - haven’t lost an ounce. :^(
So it’s not the diet, it’s going off the diet that’s the problem.
Tend? Tend?...No!No!...They **DO** gain it back. Only a very tiny percentage manage to keep it, and these are people who are absolutely meticulous about counting calories or measuring portion size. Also...They report being chronically hungry.

Environment?...Again, NO!...The environment that must change are the internal hormones ( 15 or more) that drive hunger. This is why surgery is the most effective in helping the obese lose weight and keep it off. The level of hormnes in the blood that drive hunger drops like a rock.

People who are **normally** thin are not not not thinking about measuring grains, fats, vegetables, or exercise. They just live their lives without much conscious attention to these matters. Why? Because the hormone levels that drive their hunger are NORMAL.
So its not the diet, its going off the diet thats the problem.

It’s the levels of hunger hormones ( 15 or more) that are the problem.

People of **normal** weight are giving a minutes thought to giving up sugar or switching to whole grains. They are doing nothing special. The reason they are normal weight is because their levels of hunger hormones are normal.
Those who battle obesity do not have normal hunger hormone levels.
I just started the HCG diet. Thought I’d be out of my mind with this 500 calories per day but those drops are the best appetite suppressant I’ve ever tried. I’ve even heard that those 500 calories can be burdensome. I’ll post my results in a couple weeks. Its basically anywhere between 21 to 42 days long. I’m gonna try really hard cuz I need to lose around 50 pounds. Wish me luck y’all

That's like having a doctor tell a diabetic to lower his sugar and then fail to treat the disease by giving him insulin.
It's like telling a person with high blood pressure to lower his BP to normal without giving him blood pressure medicine.

Yes that’s it and I really was very very skeptical. The 1st 2 days you take the drops are caled “fat loading” days and you’re suppose to eat everything in sight junk junk junk. Then you go anywhere from 21 to 42 days on the 500 calories£ No sugar no added fats 8 oz of lean meat per day 2 vegetables (no mixing veggies) 2 pieces of melba toast or grissini, and 2 fruits. You could conceivably lose up to 2 pounds a day. But you can’t go past 42 days on this diet.

I forgot to add that you can’t drink anything but water, tea and coffee, and sweetened with something like Stevia. You can only have 1 tbls of milk per day too. Sounds really hard right? Long term yeah, but people are raving about how fast you lose the weight. I’d say research it, talk to your doctor about it, but heck, 21-42 days and I’m down 2 sizes? I’ll take it.
Oh, and I guess it’s obvious, no beer or wine on the diet. I can handle that, but I sure like Fat Tire. Which may be part of my problem, think there’s a clue in there somewhere :)
Are you male or female? Isn’t HCG the hormone that causes women to get sick during pregnancy? I was sick as a dog while pregnant - even into the third trimester.
