Psychologist to educators: Failure of black males to graduate not your fault
Palm Beach Post ^ | January 25, 2011 | Jason Schultz

A noted psychologist told a gathering of teachers, school officials and parents that the reason why black males are struggling to graduate high school has very little to do with the failures of teachers.

It has much more to do with the failures of modern society, he said.

"I'm unwilling to stand up here and pretend that you are somehow responsible for their failures," Na'im Akbar told teachers Tuesday at a symposium on graduation rates at Atlantic Community High School. The symposium was the second meeting of a task force started by the school district to generate ideas to improve graduation rates, particularly among black males.

The graduation rate for Palm Beach County black males is about 65 percent, far behind the nearly 82 percent districtwide rate, according to a letter from Superintendent Art Johnson in the symposium program.

I believe failure of the family and parenting is core the of problem. Their dads? Wherever they are, never hooked up with the American social contract thus guaranteeing another generation of common and uncommon criminal garden slugs.

Those “men” need to spine up, take some responsibility, get in the system and offer their kids a chance. It all starts with getting the kids educated.

Its not the system. Its not the educators. Its the failures in family and related values.

Probably has nothing to do with the failures of the sstudents, themselves, their reluctance to “act white” and actually study , for example

I’d call it a systemic failure when kids are being passed from grade to grade neither knowing that two and two is four, nor that there is a correct way to form letters, nor (most grievously in my opinion) that you can’t read by guessing from the picture.

Didn’t you ever notice? Islam cannot be racist. It does not matter what anyone of Islamic faith says or does.

What he actually says, for those who don't read articles, is that the responsibility begins with single parents and poor parenting, and includes allowing kids to get their role models from Black Entertainment Television. He also blames the crack generation of the '80's, which is quite a stretch.

Liberalism is to blame.

To a large extent you're right. LBJ's Great Society destroyed the Black family. Black women "married" the federal government to get high welfare and AFDC benefits they couldn't get while married. Male heads of families became a liability, leaving young Black males fatherless and adrift.

I think an essential part of the problem is also cultural. Watch a few episodes of "The First 48" and "Hardcore Pawn" to see what I mean. The shows are very educational as well as being profoundly depressing.

“It has much more to do with the failures of modern society, he said.”

Yep, the villivication of success and the celebration of entitlements. I do agree, the modern society that celebrates the lowest common denominator has victimized an entire culture. Of course, that is exactly how the liberals want society to evolve, so we should just spend more on school administrators.

How about the failure of everyone to hold them responsible for their own lives and the direction those lives take.

'The left’s welfare system.'

You are exactly right. However, this is no longer a black/white thing. I believe they started with the blacks and now is seeping into all other races as well.

The left needs to be put down. No, I don't mean euthanized, more like neutered.

It has much more to do with the failures of modern society

The libtard behaviorist attack on Christianity starts with blaming society for any individual's problems. Next, it is the fault of Christianity for the failure of society. Next, society has to be changed by getting rid of Christianity. And government has to be made bigger and more powerful to do that.

Akbar said children are “miseducated” before they even get to the classroom because they now get their socialization and image of how they are supposed to act from television instead of their families and communities.

“[Black Entertainment Television] becomes the model of how you want to be,” Akbar said. “You want to be a clown. You want to be a pimp.”

“The graduation rate for Palm Beach County black males is about 65 percent”

That’s quite high compared to the 25 percent graduation rate in Detroit.

Neutered - yes.

They not only need to be removed from power,
but we need to remove the positions of power.

What we’ve been doing is a losing proposition - trying to get “our folks”, or “good people” into positions of power, positions with TOO much power for any person to occupy,
out of self defense. Supposedly having “one of ours” in one of these positions keeps “one of them” out. Better to not have the position exist.

80 percent of success is just showing up. They can’t educate if the students aren’t there.

IMHO, the disintegration of the African-American family is much more at fault than the teachers. Too many out of wedlock births and fatherless families. You can predict how many more uneducated, unemployed and even jailed adults grew up in those broken homes. And that goes for all races, but the number of these families in the black community is much higher.

Daniel Patrick Moynihan saw this coming in the Nixon Administration back in the 60's.

Crack mothers and grandmothers is certainly a factor but that combined with the gangbangers / dope dealers as the only males with prestige in the neighborhood is a major problem. Sadly, only the neighborhood can reform itself. No amount of outside pressure will work if they don’t want to change.

The K12 curriculum in most places has gotten so ridiculously dumbed down that anyone who doesn’t graduate has no one to blame but himself.
