Himalayan glaciers not melting because of climate change, report finds

Excerpt only website: Himalayan glaciers are actually advancing rather than retreating, claims the first major study since a controversial UN report said they would be melted within quarter of a century.

Researchers have discovered that contrary to popular belief half of the ice flows in the Karakoram range of the mountains are actually growing rather than shrinking.

The discovery adds a new twist to the row over whether global warming is causing the world's highest mountain range to lose its ice cover.

It further challenges claims made in a 2007 report by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that the glaciers would be gone by 2035.

These kinds of lies and scams aren’t hard to prove wrong, but getting the frauds to shut up might require filling some prisons with them.

Doesn’t matter. Advancing glaciers are due to global warming as well. Excess moisture etc.

All results lead directly to AGW.

Think this at Watts Up With That?...touches on this report:

New science on Himalayan glaciers shows debris fields to be a regulating factor in melting

************************EXCERPT***************************

From University of California, Santa Barbara: Scientists Find that Debris on Certain Himalayan Glaciers May Prevent Melting

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) –– A new scientific study shows that debris coverage –– pebbles, rocks, and debris from surrounding mountains –– may be a missing link in the understanding of the decline of glaciers. Debris is distinct from soot and dust, according to the scientists.

Melting of glaciers in the Himalayan Mountains affects water supplies for hundreds of millions of people living in South and Central Asia. Experts have stated that global warming is a key element in the melting of glaciers worldwide.

Bodo Bookhagen, assistant professor in the Department of Geography at UC Santa Barbara, co-authored a paper on this topic in Nature Geoscience, published this week. The first author is Dirk Scherler, Bookhagen’s graduate student from Germany, who performed part of this research while studying at UCSB.

“With the aid of new remote-sensing methods and satellite images, we identified debris coverage to be an important contributor to glacial advance and retreat behaviors,” said Bookhagen. “This parameter has been almost completely neglected in previous Himalayan and other mountainous region studies, although its impact has been known for some time.”

The finding is one more element in a worldwide political controversy involving global warming. “Controversy about the current state and future evolution of Himalayan glaciers has been stirred up by erroneous reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),” according to the paper.

“There is no ‘stereotypical’ Himalayan glacier,” said Bookhagen. “This is in clear contrast to the IPCC reports that lumps all Himalayan glaciers together.”

Bookhagen noted that glaciers in the Karakoram region of Northwestern Himalaya are mostly stagnating. However, glaciers in the Western, Central, and Eastern Himalaya are retreating, with the highest retreat rates –– approximately 8 meters per year –– in the Western Himalayan Mountains. The authors found that half of the studied glaciers in the Karakoram region are stable or advancing, whereas about two-thirds are in retreat elsewhere throughout High Asia. This is in contrast to the prevailing notion that all glaciers in the tropics are retreating.

Much discussion in the comments at WUWT about just what exactly can be concluded from the Telegraph article and the Scientists Report....

Glaciers growing instead of shrinking ? Must have figured out a way to release their chakra.

Looks like next week will be even more exciting then this week. We start the week with an Arctic Blast aimed at the heart of Texas. Looks like freezes all the way down to the Rio Grand valley by the middle of week. Possible catastrophic ice storm slamming the deep south Wednesday and Thursday next week. Looks like Glaciers are growing just about every where this winter.

let's see...

the debris on the ice keeps it from melting,

the fraudsters deny the sun has any effect on their globull warming model and they STILL claim it is getting warmer,

the ice doesn't melt when it is protected from the sun by the debris,

AND YET IT DOESN'T MELT EVEN THOUGH THEY SAY IT'S GETTING HOTTER!!!

whats wrong with this picture???

Advancing, eh? Next thing you know, Himalayan glaciers will be sneaking into this country from Mexico.

If it isn't global warming, then there's only one other possible cause.

Sarah Palin.

This is not the first study to confirm the same ratios of stable, shrinking, growing with the chain. You have in the past posted same issue. Articles basically saying the same thing. So one shouldn't think these guys are off on their estimates.
Well spent four hours shoveling. Go in take a nap have din din. Bingo back on the street. The city of Philadelphia decides after twenty years for a plow to come down my street. Bingo, solid additional hour of having to haul huge chunks of ice and almost frozen solid snow blocks across the street and somehow heaving them over the current six foot high piles.
Where is Big Al Gore when one needs him.

the debris on the ice keeps it from melting,

Two things:

First, its not as much that ice is kept from melting. Mountain glaciers always seasonally melt off. The keyword here is net gain of ice. That is because there is actually enough moisture in the mountain air to condense and precipitate as snow in the mountains, that you gain snow and ice over what was lost from seasonal melting. The problem with the previous predictions about lost glaciers is that they didn’t consider orthographic lifting, the process of water vapor from the coast condensing and freezing into snow as it climbs the mountains. Water is a powerful feedback to temperature, something that the alarmists didn’t bother showing calculations for, at least in collecting.

Debris has a lower reflectivity than snow, assuming it is sand or soot relocated from China and/or India. Debris heats up and melts snow because it absorbs light from the Sun, producing heat- if it is simply sitting on the ice. If airborne, it can reflect significant portions of sunlight before they can even touch the surface or the snow, which may have been what you meant there.

The amount of moisture in the atmosphere and winds to carry it inland from the oceans, are a far bigger player, than is the debris.
