It could have been the “Howler”
You are probably correct, but keep in mind, when Top Gun was created, missiles, like the AMRAAM, didn’t have a “Radius of No Escape.”
How effective is the AMRAAM Radius of No Escape if the target is not limited to G forces survivable by a human pilot?
You are correct. It has been 25 years since I was in and the terminology has left me. They were called universal exciters and I remembers seeing a LOT of digital cards inside them. The exciter tech had a really easy job. Basically he connected it to the computer and let the computer run the check. He then took out the bad card and sent it back to the manufacturer for repair, unlike the techs who repaired the older exciters who had to troubleshoot and repair them down to the component level.
I’ll bet that the universal exciters we had then are so obsolete that they have replaced them with ones with ten times the capability and 1/10 the number of components.
I remember doing inspection and pulling the panels off the football and pulling the receivers out.
Probably a LOT smaller... There is just something about a 20G turn...
It would have to be highly automated to go from three ECMOs to one. The EM band has expanded greatly and there are frequencies to monitor and jam that weren’t even in use 25 years ago.
P.S. The test data was loaded on a 12” removable hard disk! I think it held a couple of megabytes of data.
>>Not to say you are wrong but that has been said before. Teaching dog fighting to pilots who had never been trained in it before is the reason Top Gun School was formed.<<
And it should still be taught and direct contact tactics should be a strong consideration when designing planes.
My point is that the new generation of classic airframes (F-15, F-16, F-18) probably can’t go nose to nose with the F-22 and the Ruski and Chicom knockoffs (again, I said probably — no one really knows IMHO). But they are still not only viable but continue to be superior in their respective roles (this is, of course, more than less the guy behind the stick).
If you can’t hit the big guy in the face, you sure as hell can break his kneecap!
Were you “O” or “I” level?
That answer has been known for several years. Don't drink the "stealth makes me invisible" kool aid.
“I would think the loss of two EW officers might be a big loss in capabilities.”
ECMO-1 was used as a copilot/navigator, which any modern (post 1990) navigation system would largely replace. The 2 ECMOs in the back did ELINT work as well as jamming, although a lot of that could easily be done better with automated systems and recorders.
By the time it retired, the EF-111 EWO could get bored much of the flight...
I-level. AIMD 610 - Comm-Nav shop. Onboard ship, my work space was in the VANS with the ECM techs.
I was once told by a guy that the Skyraider knocked down more jet MiGs in Korea than any other type of aircraft. I have never seen that anywhere else but he should know. He was there.
I was speaking in terms of pure dogfight-style maneuvering.
I seem to recall there is an odd story behind that capture you posted, maybe someone knows what I am talking about?
I always assumed stealth meant from ground-based detection, not eye in the sky nor enemy craft on-board detection systems.
But really my point is that the classic airframes we have in place are still dominant — there are physics realities beyond which you start hitting diminishing returns (such as thrust vectoring). It is those physical realities that are sinking the F-35.
To really outdo those frames, it will require a quantum jump in design approach and technology — the F22 (and variants) are really just increments.
Let me clarify my point: The F-15, F-16 and F-18 (and variants) are still the dominant aircraft in their respective spheres and will remain so for quite some time. The F-22 is IMHO slightly better, but only slightly, when adjusting for avionics that can be put onto the listed airframes. The F-35 will never be put into any useful role except as a multi-million dollar paperweight and a sop to special interests.
In the meantime I keep emailing the guys reverse engineering the anti-grav craft at Area 51 telling them to hurry but for some reason they don’t answer...
>>Skyraider <<
The prop?
Yeah, that’s what I said!
Wow!
