Productivity gains mean many low-skilled workers are shut out
The U.S. manufacturing sector is roaring back after the worst recession in generations. So why arent factory jobs coming back as quickly?
One big reason: Business executives like Drew Greenblatt, owner of Baltimore-based Marlin Steel Wire Products, have figured out how to make more widgets with the same number of workers. To do so, he's had to upgrade the skills and wages of his employees. But his profits are bigger than ever.

Buried in orders, but can’t deliver, losing their shirts or praying the customers don’t figure out there getting crap. Welcome to the new American industrial age brought to you by hoards of Quickie-MBA Wannabe CEOs.
I hear this all the time from my husband and others. In other words the people who are working are working much harder with more hours, their salary and most are not being compensated.
When all the price support and payments for not growing crops started under FDR is was meant to stop the rapid reduction in farm worker jobs.
Manufacturing jobs have disappeared WORLDWIDE.
Even China with all the manufacturing jobs they added still had a net loss of manufacturing jobs from 1995 to 2005.
By contrast the US in the same period lost fewer manufacturing jobs than any other country, due to productivity gains.
We can blame taxes, regulations, illegals, China, whatever. But the fact is, the world has changed. We have a lot of "stuff", and we don't have a "need" for many of our workers.
There is no an easy fix. We're looking at a large percentage of our population being decidedly unemployable. You can wave a magic wand and make the illegals disappear, but the cold fact remains: our society is in a post-scarcity phase, and we don't know what to do with the workers we don't need.
Everybody will be an entrepreneur.
Those left working are becoming slaves, as they have to take up the slack for all those let go, as the prices of everything they purchase goes up, while their wages remain stagnant, as their benefits are reduces or slashed. The working class, whats left of them, are simple screwed.
This will not end well for anyone.
Service industry, pizza delivery jobs are plentiful.
BS.
Get used to it, folks.
Alternatively, over the years dead wood collects and does nothing much more than clutter up the place. The dead wood has been chucked and a general pruning permits new growth.
Real productivity is no longer dampened by unnecessary people
they’re salary. lol In all my years I have never heard so many people who are thankful for their jobs but they are being pushed to do more and work longer hours. There are a lot of miserable people out there. I know a woman who manages a apartment complex and her boss is the most greedy and evil person who sincerely does not care about maintenance of the properties even if the city cites him, he will pay the fines which are cheaper. Because of him the federal subsidizing, hud, canceled their contracts and 26 families had to move in January. He makes it a point to just see how much he can make life miserable for others. He is a liberal elitist from California and believes the rest of the world is beneath him.
When gas goes to $5.00 a gallon, pizza delivery will become a thing of the past....Or the price of pizza doubles, which will probably happen anyway...At that point, the pizza eaters can no longer afforded pizza. A Pizza at that point, with a tip, will cost you $65.00...lol
The union “protects” the wage only as they threaten violence upon the business owner.
The bottom line is that if you do not offer to an employer value, you should not expect to be paid well. Put it another way: If your job is easily mechanized, you should be looking for another line of work.
As the economy in flames is nose diving into the ground, hows that working out for ya bert?
lol...
I have a BIG problem with forced membership, federally forced open reporting on how members vote, manipulation of union membership dues to finance elections, elected officials, and voter fraud.
All one has to do is look a video of cars being built. There are thousands and thousands of robots who work better, faster, and cheaper than any human can. No human is ever going to do those jobs again.
Nearly every industry has some ‘robot’ or other mechanical aid taking the place of workers.
Barry just accelerated the switch by attacking companies bottom lines.
My prediction is that inevitably we will all belong to employment “guilds” who will farm people out to various companies for assignments on a temporary basis. Basically the concept of “Just-In-Time” Employment.
