Palin's NeoCon Path
New American ^ | February 8, 2011 | Jack Kenny

Posted on 02/08/2011 11:27:35 AM PST by Hawk720

When John McCain announced his choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate on August 29, 2008, the only foreign policy experience or expertise the Republican vice presidential candidate could point to was her 20 months as Governor of the only state between Canada and Russia.

But the former Governor and potential 2012 presidential candidate has come a long way in the little more than two years since the enormously successful “hockey mom” speech she delivered at the Republican National Convention. In an op-ed piece in USA Today last December 21, Palin sounded like an old foreign policy hand from inside the Washington beltway.

In the article, headlined “Time to Get Tough With Iran,” the leader of the “Mama Grizzlies” warned of the potential danger to Israel, America, and other nations if the Iranian government should develop a nuclear bomb. Existing sanctions are not severe enough, she insisted, since they are not, in her words, capable of “crippling” Iran economically:

Much more can be done, such as banning insurance for shipments to Iran, banning all military sales to Iran, ending all trade credits, banning all financial dealings with Iranian banks, limiting Iran’s access to international capital markets and banking services, closing air space and waters to Iran’s national air and shipping lines, and, especially, ending Iran’s ability to import refined petroleum. These would be truly “crippling” sanctions. They would work if implemented.

But just how are these crippling measures, particularly the closing of air space and waters to Iran’s commerce, to be implemented? With an air and naval blockade? Palin didn’t say.

First of all, since like "organic," there's a whole bunch of daffynitions of neo-con out there, what's yours?

Secondly, where does Palin's record match the elements of this "neo-con-itus" disease.

The one problem I have with this article is that the author conflates Neocons with foreign policy "realists" like Kissinger and the Nixon administration.

If Sarah is listening to both Neocons and Realists, then that is actually a good thing.

Of course it would be even better if she favored a policy where the vast majority of overseas American presence was in the form of traveling citizens and private business, rather than military personnel and government aid.

But Reagan failed in controlling the growth in government, failed in controlling the growth of deficits and grew the debt substantially. He was starting with less debt, so those things were more tolerable at that time. He had a bigger purpose in mind: winning the cold war.

My point is that Palin, or anyone else who tried to do what Reagan did in the 1980s would find that the policies that worked then are a disaster now.

Reagan grew the defense budget substantially. The next President will have to cut the defense budget substantially.

To date Palin hasn't showed that she understands this. Like many of her mentors in the neo-con movement, including McCain.

Excellent article.

I have suspected that many of Palin’s FReeper fans don’t know that Palin was “discovered” by the neocon crowd. Think about it- would McCain have reached across the aisle to choose a “true conservative” for VP? We all know he doesn’t reach out in that direction.

Cap and trade, amnesty, LOST, Title IX, redistributing “big oil’s” money to Alaskans, DADT, her “choice” in keeping Trig ... She is not the conservative that some think she is.

Good points. You will probably be attacked by some of the more delusional Palin supporters, but you are accurate in describing her political stands.

Most important....John McCain in no way was ever going to select a conservative to run with him. Never.

Nothing to think about. Of course he would - to balance him out. How many voted for him BECAUSE of Sarah? Sarah was the draw in that election - NOT McCain.

Usually, in terms of usage of the word, “neo-con” means Jewish, too close to Jewish interests, and/or a supporter of Israel.

Commonly used by isolationists and Paul-istinians to describe anyone who opposes the total abandonment of Israel.

The way things are going, I see a repeat of 2008 already. we are ready to eat our own already.

If Palin wins the nomination - I will devote time effort and money 24/7 for her.

If Huck, Romeny, or someone else wins, I will vote for them in 2012.

Sorry, I know how stinky Romney and Huck are, but Obama is drastically worse and will likely get 2 SC picks next term.

I can’t stay home with that specter looming, as distateful as voting for someone other than Sarah might be.

Ug! Abstaining from the Presidential vote is one thing, “staying home” is not something that should EVER be a consideration of a politically minded conservative.

There are down ballot elections going on in 2012 you know.

In other words she a “neo-con” as label by the Alex Jones school of "libertarians"

As opposed to Obama, who had about 20 months of residency in the US that we can document before scamming his way into the office of President.

Today is a good day to die.

She is the most conservative potential winning candidate for the Presidency that we have had in my voting lifetime

I'd say she's about on par with GWB. I assume Reagan wasn't in your 'voting lifetime'.

So Reagan was a "neo-con" whatever that is?

Look, they knew they were growing the defense budget and they defeated the USSR because of it. They knew they were widening the deficit and their tax cuts created 25 years of unprecedented economic prosperity and growth.

Keep your eye on the ball. What Reagan failed to do (not because he didn't want to or "didn't understand") was obliterate the bloated beast of big government by vaporizing most of the administrative regulatory agencies, cabinet departments, entitlements, and Congressional waste followed by a flat sales tax of around 10%, overturning the 16th amendment, and dissolving the IRS. He did a lot but was unable to do that.

THAT is what Palin DOES understand and THAT is the challenge for the next generation of true conservatives.

....the only foreign policy experience or expertise the Republican vice presidential candidate could point to was her 20 months as Governor of the only state between Canada and Russia.

And the only foreign experience Obama could cite was his INDONESIAN and/or KENYAN citizenship, his undocumented Jihadi training and indoctrination in Pakistan, and a dubious academic career at Columbia and Harvard - both foreign to the ideals of this country. He has two years in office now, and he STILL has no foreign relations experience unless you want to count sucking on an ice cream cone or two.
