House rejects measure that would extend key Patriot Act provisions through December
The Washington Post ^ | 02/08/2011 | Felicia Sonmez

A measure to extend key provisions of the Patriot Act counterterrorism surveillance law through December failed the House Tuesday night, with more than two-dozen Republicans bucking their party to oppose the measure.

The House measure, which was sponsored by Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) and required a two-thirds majority for passage, failed on a 277-to-148 vote. Twenty-six Republicans voted with 122 Democrats to oppose the measure, while 67 Democrats voted with 210 Republicans to back it. Ten members did not vote.

The measure would have extended three key provisions of the Patriot Act that are set to expire on Monday, Feb. 28, unless Congress moves to reauthorize them. One of the provisions authorizes the FBI to continue using roving wiretaps on surveillance targets; the second allows the government to access "any tangible items," such as library records, in the course of surveillance; and the third is a "lone wolf" provision of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorist Prevention Act that allows for the surveillance of targets who are not connected to an identified terrorist group.

I'm sure you have a reason why you think this is good.

Seems to me that the 26 "Republicans" that voted against this are RINO's

I would love you to prove me wrong, and I am being serious.

This had 125 plus more votes in favor than against.

Kill it.

They should use common sense and tighten immigration and profile instead.

Rome2k,

USNV is right. It is good that this failed. The Patriot Act has done nothing to help our country and make it safer.

Only a true progressive would think this is a good law.

http://www.dailytech.com/FBI+Agent+Turned+ACLU+Counsel+Feds+Spy+On+Citizens+Based+on+Religion+Politics/article20854.htm

Just like most crap legislation that covers massive govt expansion through the guise of safety it never does what they say they want it for...it is only a ruse to take away your personal freedoms and treat good law abiding citizens like criminals.

But you probably don’t care that they use the Patriot Act as a loophole to catch “other” criminals...hey as long as they get some bad guys with it - the end justifies the means.

For me it’s the fact it’s a leaky boat. Law enforcement has abused it and used it to arrest for crimes that aren’t remotely what the act was meant to be for. If they can plug the holes and fix it I might be more open to supporting it, but not as it is.

List the GOP that voted against it.

Prove your point.

“List the GOP that voted against it.

Why don’t you, you’re the one that said they were RINOs, so go ahead tell us who they are! Personally I don’t really care so long as they voted it down I’m happy. This was being widely abused and is a gross violation of our rights that was not making us any safer. Now if they could just get rid of the bail outs to the bankers I’d really be happy!

It doesn’t matter who voted for or against...what matters is that we recognize that things like the Patriot Act are bad for America and bad for freedom. The proof is in that it hasn’t helped make us safer.

Maybe we need a litmus test that exposes legislation that is progressive in nature and then let’s have the debate on the merits of that.

People in America need to be discussing “can man govern themselves” as the founder’s envisioned that it is the point of the American experiment.

GOOD!

Couldn't agree more.

The Congress' job is to strip this coup of every single tool that can be turned to tyranny.

The Soetoro Regime cannot be trusted with *any* technology, or cover of law, since it is, at its core, completely lawless.

Today is a good day to die.
I didn't say for whom.

The PATRIOT Act unconstitutionally infringes on the civil liberties of Americans while not providing any useful result.

Most of the GOP is too concerned about elections and looking ‘soft on terrorism’ to even consider voting against something called the PATRIOT Act. Of those, a good majority voted for the original when GWB proposed it, and have defended it ever since. Politically, they can’t admit that it was a terrible idea from day 1.

Shouldn't we secure the border before we worry about stuff like this?

The TSA & DHS are a scam. A Imam on a terror watch list just snuck across the southern border... Why isn't there a fence yet?

OK

Twenty-six Republicans voted with 122 Democrats to oppose the measure, while 67 Democrats voted with 210 Republicans to back it.

These 26 are obviously way smarter and more CONSERVATIVE than the TWO HUNDRED TEN GOP members that voted to FIGHT THE RAGHEADS.

This is actually a HUGE VICTORY FOR OSAMA BIN LADEN AND HIS COMRADES ABROAD AND IN THE US.

Watch your neck, Turkey.

Not huge. The provisions would not and did not stop terrorism. They did contribute to false positives (wasted resources spent tracking the wrong people). The real fight against terrorism comes from actions overseas (which are not affected by this vote) and core values at home.
