Jackson Lee blasts 'demeaning' Pepsi Super Bowl ad
The Hill ^ | 02/09/11 08:56 AM ET | Pete Kasperowicz

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) took to the House floor Tuesday night to criticize what she called a "demeaning" Pepsi ad that aired during the Super Bowl.

In the ad for Pepsi Max, a black woman sitting on a park bench gets angry with her husband after an attractive, white female jogger sits down next to the couple and smiles and waves at the man.

After the man smiles back, his girlfriend or wife gets angry and whips her Pepsi Max can at him. The man ducks, and the can hits the attractive jogger in the head. The ad is titled "Love hurts."

Jackson Lee said it was ridiculous for the soft drink maker to air the advertisement during African-American history month.

"In this month of African-American history where we're trying to celebrate what is good and great, it certainly seems ridiculous that Pepsi would utilize this kind of humor," she said. "It was not humorous. It was demeaning — an African-American woman throwing something at an African-American male and winding up hitting a Caucasian woman."

IT was really "funny" how she was knocked senseless then they ran away. Hilarious.

The seeds of O.J. Simpson's violent ignominy and our nation's obscene reaction to it are displayed in that commercial.

The night of Nicole Simpson's murder, I was working with a group of black women. When we got the news, the entire sample expressed, to my horror, that O.J. was justified in killing the b*+ch because she cheated on him. By the time the trial arrived they were all sure beyond the shadow of a doubt that he was innocent /s

You are all missing the point. It's not about assaulting anyone. Jackson Lee is offended that the black man in the ad finds the white woman attractive.

You are correct, sir... and that's what makes Sheila Jackson Lee's outrage all the more unfortunate: Even on the rare occasions when she's ostensibly right, she's substantively wrong. She simply can't loosen her grip on her own hatred long enough to lodge a cogent criticism. It reminds me of Sister Soulja offering "If black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?"

The commercial got a little dicey bc they sneak away and leave the unconscious woman there. Also, usually they don’t have you throw the product away like that, they usually dramatize that you can’t part with it.

I thought the violent quotient was a bit high, knocking an anonymous young woman out w a soda can, imho.

How about it’s none of your business, Sheila.

I wouldn’t really care, actually. It’s an ad, the damage is simulated, and it doesn’t make me want to buy State Farm.

Other than that, funny is shock at unexpected event. This was that, including a prat-fall. If it were reversed, I’d laugh at that too.

The ad really crystalized it. It was okay that the (dumb) white woman was injured and assaulted, it was okay to run away, we have no concern if she was seriously injured.

I mean it is highly comical when a white woman is hit in the temple with a 12 oz piece of aluminum.

Anyone who thinks this is funny should aks themselves if they would laugh if it was their sister, mother, wife or daughter hit in the temple. I mean getting hit in the temple with a heavy object in the temple is incredibly comical.

I am amazed at some of the idiots who post here on FR.

Or Pepsi, for that matter.

I like Dr Pepper and Coke. Pepsi is too sweet to the taste.

That entire series simply makes me want to change the channel. And I’ve heard that Nationwide has such great rates because their policies basically exclude the possibility of paying claims.

What is your daughter was hit in the temple with 12 oz of aluminum and the perps ran away. Would that be comical? Idiot.

Then the black women in your group agreed 100% with Daniel of the KKK on Howard Stern who said “white bitch got what she deserved” (for marrying a black).

And btw OJ and Nicole were separated and I don’t think OJ was refraining from “cheating”.

Anyone finding this commercial funny is absolutely clueless as to what is going on around them. Must be nice. For now.

Well I can accept adult humor but the ad was shocking really because it treated violence as light hearted.

IF the white woman was a celebrity you might accept it as outrageous comedy.

In this case it was very odd to have the product used as a weapon knocking a young woman out, and it was thrown in anger, also knocking a woman out and running off to leave her there was pretty extreme.

"You’re a moron - that’s my ruling."

Yawn. Brilliant. Not even worth a retort.

Um, my daughter is not a paid professional actress.
You know that the whole commercial is not real, right?

I know you don’t watch tv, but for heaven’s sake, to call someone an idiot because he/she doesn’t blur the lines between reality and the boob tube, is uncalled for.

I resent the ad’s condoning of women’s domestic violence towards men. It is really not funny when women throw cans, plates and whatever else at men.

BTW, I am a woman

Some needs to remind me-—use VERY small words, please, as I was educated in a one-room elementary school—just exactly why anything that Jackson-Lee says is relevant???

She can see black words typed on a piece of white paper & find racism in that, also.

She is an ignorant piece of trash. Her constituents needs some brain cleansing to get them to see her for what she really is.

That is Michelle Obama, isn’t it?

Either you forgot the < /sarcasm> tag, or you have not been paying attention. I think that is a gal the imposter IC was checking out at the G20 conference last year.

An entire species long run at survival has given the male human much faster reaction time than females. That is from millions of beverage containers, apples, snakes, rocks, bones, and coconuts being rifled at our heads by the female of the same species.

Unfortunately evolution has not yet given us the psychic ability we need to read the female mind to guarantee our survival. Maybe that will come soon?

Until then, here's to fast reaction time!

If the roles had been reversed, and a White woman had got hit in the head, no doubt everything would be jake...
