When she learned that Forbes magazine last week named Sacramento fifth on its annual list of most miserable cities, Sacramento high school teacher Kari Bluff took to her blog to express her succinct reaction:
"Stuff it, Forbes," she wrote.
.....Judging from the insulted tone of online comments, blog posts, Facebook updates and letters to the editor, the Forbes list has hit a nerve with local residents.
"I hate to say it, but misery has a direct correlation to money," said Tim Hinsche, a 64-year-old real estate broker who downsized to a one-bedroom Sacramento apartment after the short sale of his Folsom home.
"I don't think Sacramento has any other drawbacks than the struggling economy."
Granted, Sacramento has taken hit after hit with high unemployment, the foreclosure crisis, furlough days, salary reductions and service cuts resulting from strapped state and local budgets.
But what seems to especially gall Sacramentans is the fact that the Forbes misery index purports to rate not only the economy but also quality of life issues like weather, crime rates and commute times.
So how could Sacramento – home of the dry heat and the relatively quick commute – possibly rank No. 5, while the magazine considers perennial problem spots like Cleveland (No. 10) and Detroit (No. 15) less miserable?
..."Quality of life is the main thing. There are a lot of people here who have their mortgages under control. Their lifestyle here is fantastic. I don't think most people in Sacramento think they're living a miserable life."
..."The whole Forbes presumption that any place in America is miserable based on economic statistics represents a bankrupt world view," said Sapunor, 30, who lives in South Land Park.
Snap! Take that, Forbes.
Sapunor even suggests the city should sue the magazine for civic slander.

They’re okay with it if Detroit or some Texas city or any fly\over city lands on the list but they quickly cry, “I want my lawyer!” when they get tagged with that label.
Totally bogus ranking if Sac is 5th worse and Detroit only 15th worse.

These are all relevant factors.
It comes down to the weights.
I lived in Sacramento for 21 years. The weather there to me is more important than professional sports. Crime was not bad.
I can imagine that the reduction in home value plays alot into this. Detroit/Cleveland home values may have declined little in the past three years since they had already declined. Not so in Sacramento.
Many persons who had their financial future ripped out from them are going to be miserable. Many people in Detroit / Cleveland didn't have a financial future.
What is telling in Sacramento is sports. The Kings suck worse than ever. As if to compound, they renamed the stadium from "ARCO (a major energy company) Arena" to the "Power Balance Pavilion" apparently a company that sells fairy dust.
One other factor should be added to calculate the misery index and that is the number/% of illegals in each city/state.
The illegals come here demanding instant free rent,food, health care, ob care for their Anchor Baby mothers, and from what we see on tv and in the fishwraps they are truly miserable people. They hate America which enables them to escape their miserable third world country.
The misery of illegals doesn’t stop with the illegals, it spreads to the left wing activists in each city from city hall to the local mediots. They scream 365/24/7 about how miserable they and their beloved illegals are. Of course they demand more tax payer money for their beloved illegals.
Then, the silent tax paying majority gets really miserable for having to pay for the illegals new and so called liberal life style and having to listen to their whining activists whining about how bad the illegals have it in America, the land of free living for them.
Then, the silent tax paying majority has to pay and put up with the crimes committed by the whining illegals. The personal costs are high and so are the $ costs relating to policing, arrests, and putting illegal criminals into prison and keeping them there.

The $ cost and personal/misery costs of supporting the illegals, who hate America, grows each day.
Flyover country looks better.
Weather becomes a bigger factor for many of us as we grow older and wiser re why suffer with miserable weather.

The kids qualify for monthly SSI checks, faking ADD; the illegal and his wife get SSI if they fake being aged, blind or disabled; SSI qualifies them for Medicare.
Plus illegals don't worry about pricey items like car insurance, life insurance, or homeowners insurance, and qualifies for relief from high energy bills.

Unable to use her right hand because of the growing tumor, Sanchez, 24, had been at the University of Texas Medical Branch's John Sealy Hospital for six days when, she said, a Spanish-speaking doctor told her she had to leave the hospital immediately because she was an illegal immigrant. The doctor said she should have surgery in Mexico, according to Sanchez.
Sanchez's hospital records state that she was discharged because she was "an undocumented pt (patient) with no insurance." Records show that Sanchez underwent at least one medical procedure and surgery was scheduled before she was dismissed without warning Jan. 12.
After being discharged, Sanchez called her husband, Luis Aguillon, a legal U.S. resident, who arrived at the hospital to find his wife and his mother sitting on her bed crying.
"They treated us like animals, like dogs or something," said Aguillon, 36, an unemployed welder.
Sanchez's abrupt expulsion raises ethical and legal questions about the treatment of low-income patients with life-threatening conditions. A doctor who reviewed Sanchez's medical records for the Houston Chronicle said they showed that UTMB ejected a woman with a potentially fatal condition because she was unable to pay...........

Pedro is probably happy re his lifestyle, and those who are paying for his family of illegals and their life style are probably high on the misery index.
I was born and raised in San Francisco. In 1969, the family moved to Sacramento. I was 10.
Sacramento was a sprawling CA valley cow town with few problems and little to recommend it. It wasn’t too bad of a place to live.
Today Sacramento is just a bigger, nastier, more rude, more congested cow town. It doesn’t help that half of Oakland moved into places like Elk Grove and Natomas.
My old neighborhood is still nice but the large succession of Taquerias and fenced yards is constantly creeping closer. This is from the massive middle class white flight from Sacramento to Lincoln, Rocklin, Roseville, and El Dorado Hills, & etc.
1985-2007 I lived in San Francisco to work on the bay bridges. Visiting my Sacramento parents those 12 years, I saw a steady progression of crowding and decay. They sleepy cowtown became San Jose in a decade.
When I decided to return to Sacramento in 2007, I just couldn’t do it and leaped over it for the crappy little conservative cowtown of Yuba City.
Yes, Sacramento is pretty miserable living. I couldn’t go back to it after the place was ruined. I wouldn’t live in Sacramento on a bet. Compared to 1969, it has been ruined. That is hardly unique to Sacramento.
Exactly...... it is California.
