Former defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who served at the Pentagon under two Republican presidents, says the “time has come” time for gays and lesbians to serve openly in the US military.
Two months after President Obama signed a law that will lead to the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Rumsfeld told ABC News Radio that the nation is ready for open service.
“First of all, we know that gays and lesbians have been serving in the military for decades with honorable service,” Rumsfeld said. “We know that [repeal of a ban on gays serving openly] is an idea whose time has come.”
Rumsfeld says he has “enormous respect” for the ground commanders and service chiefs who have expressed concerns about the impact of gays serving openly on unit cohesion, and he urged the top brass to implement the new law “with care.”
But Rumsfeld says that congress, which passed the repeal bill in the waning days of the last session, has expressed the will of the American people.
“We’ve seen it evolve in our country,” Rumsfeld said of the nation’s perception of gays and lesbians, reiterating that many have served in uniform with distinction.

Rumsfeld says it is the will of the people??? Where are his stats on this? I used to think Rumsfeld was a truth speaker but this latest burst makes me think he was and is nothing more than an approval seeker. However, I might veer my mind on this if someone can clue me in on what the Founding Fathers thought about homosexualality.

Sorry Donald, just as I don’t agree with men and women serving in combat, a couple of gays or one gay and a willing accomplice in a foxhole could compromise the whole platoon or company. Give it a rest. Common sense should rule on this one, as witnessed by the United States Marine Corps. Semper Fi.

Personally, I think that any homosexual in the military who lets it be known they are a homosexual, is an idiot.
1) To start with, the military is not about sexuality in the first place. It is not a jobs program, or a social laboratory. As Rush Limbaugh succinctly puts it, “The purpose of a military is to kill people and break things.” Anything that distracts from that mission diminishes that mission. By this I mean that it gets *our* people killed and *our* stuff broken.
2) The reason that females are not permitted in combat units is because many males have an instinctual response when they see or think they see a female in danger. Instinctual responses cannot be trained out of a person, group therapied out of a person, or ordered out of a person. And though some females are physically and mentally capable of serving in a combat unit, they are outnumbered 10 or 20 to 1 by males who would be handicapped in their presence.
Likewise, many men have an instinctual revulsion to homosexuals. And in a percentage of those men, this revulsion is to the extent of homicide. It is impossible to distinguish them from other men, yet again their numbers are so significantly greater, and their superiority as soldiers is so great, that no number of homosexuals could make up for their loss.
3) Homosexuality has nothing to do with job performance, but the declaration of homosexuality has as its purpose ulterior motives outside of job performance. But what would these motives be?
Generally, it would be to assert that the individual was a member of a “protected class”, to evade performance of their duties. Likewise, this inherently contains a threat of complaint, jumping the chain of command, if they are still required to perform their duties. In either case it is intolerable within the ranks.
Otherwise, declaration of homosexuality would be to object to responses to a previous declaration of homosexuality. For example, a soldier tells their peers that they are homosexual, and they socially reject him because of it. So the homosexual complains to a superior about his social rejection as a demand that his peers be ordered to accept his homosexuality and readmit him to their peer group.
In other words, for a homosexual to declare their homosexuality either means that he wants special favors, or to use his homosexuality to force others to respect him for it.
I hope this ends the hero worship of this man. File him with Cheney.
