A prominent Republican is warning his party about its rhetoric on immigration reform.
During a recent speech at an event hosted by The Ripon Society, former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie said, “We favor welcoming legal immigrants into this country and believe it's a good thing.
"But sometimes that policy gets lost because we’re so busy talking about keeping illegal immigrants out," he said.
Gillespie said Republicans have a responsibility to "welcome people" into the U.S.
His comments come as the party grapples with immigration issues, with some Republicans favoring a guest-worker program and most calling for stricter border controls.
Gillespie was a senior aide to former President George W. Bush, who unsuccessfully pushed Congress to pass a comprehensive immigration reform measure.
"We have not only a right, but an obligation to secure our borders," Gillespie said. "But we also have to welcome people into our country and into our party, I would argue as a Republican. I say that not based on any theory. I know this to be a fact."

Any stance other than the aforementioned; is total BS and equates to the continued invasion.
Myself, I would favor a 50 year moratorium on all immigration from the third world. We simply don’t need any more illiterate peasants in our country, and we need to take strong action to repatriate most if not all undesirables back to wherever it is they came from.
I don’t know what he’s talking about and I have a feeling niether does he.
We don’t have to do a Damned thing for anybody at the expense of Americans. Importing warm bodies to create a new welfare dependent, and often criminal, class isn’t compassionate, it’s stupid!
Memo to Ed:
With many of these illegals coming here not for jobs but for the generous welfare and other “benefits” provided (against their will) by American tax slaves — er — payers and the Donkey party being the major supporter of those “benes,” can you REALLY be so stupid as to believe that these illegals will BECOME PUBBIES?”
That was a rhetorical question as most of us already know the answers.
Gillespie, G.W. Bush, Jeb Bush, McCain, Grahamnesty, Kyl, Gingrich, Barbor, etc. All traitors on immigration. It is time to purge all candidates based upon this litmus test. Didn’t any of these clowns see the piece today about nuclear materials coming into San Diego? This is not just about illegal aliens stealing jobs and driving up unemployment. It is an existential threat across our porous borders. If we do not complete the WALL that Congress authorized in 2006, it is inevitable for terrorists to bring WMDs across that border.

Maybe they have 150, 000 illegals.
He needs to do more than just fly over a border states enroute to and from the coasts.
We should roll out the red carpet ONLY FOR THOSE WHO RESPECT OUR LAWS AND ARRIVE LEGALLY. All the rest need a boot to the azz out the door.

With the plague we have here in the Silicon Valley of the H1B visa engineers shoving out the American Citizen engineers (who get multi-year layoffs as a reward for being a productive taxpayer), I respectfully disagree.
We MUST start addressing the numbers of even _legal_ immigration when so many of our own are out of work.
Where does it say I have a responsibility to welcome people to this country. They have a responsibility to come here legally and thank this country for giving them an opportunity they obviously don’t have in their own country.

I’m not thinking that a guest worker really counts as an “immigrant.” An “immigrant” is someone willing to put down stakes in his or her new country, from the get-go.
Most who oppose illegal immigration simply want a SANE an secure BORDER policy, and a way to CONTROL the flow of LEGAL immigration into our country! Only the extremists and racists who know NOTHING about history would TOTALLY stop immigration! BUT, to STOP ILLEGAL immigration and to put caps on legal immigration will SAVE our country, our culture and our way of LIFE. Gillespie is clueless if he doesn’t recognize that reality.
