Lara Logan Attacked, Sexually Assaulted In Egypt (CBS Reporter)
TV Newser ^ | Feb. 15, 2011 | Alex Werpin

CBS News says that correspondent Lara Logan was attacked and sexually assaulted last Friday in Cairo’s Tahrir Square while filming a piece for “60 Minutes.”

From the CBS News statement:

On Friday February 11, the day Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down, CBS Correspondent Lara Logan was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for a 60 MINUTES story when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration. It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into a frenzy.

In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers. She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning. She is currently in the hospital recovering.

There will be no further comment from CBS News and Correspondent Logan and her family respectfully request privacy at this time.

Although I'm hesitant to make a political point off the back of her tragedy, but...this should be a cautionary tale for those who wish to put American Service women in direct, front-line combat roles. In that part of the world, this isn't an isolated incident. Great point. The retards in Congress and the higher ranks probably wont' get it though.

I wish her well. It will be interesting to see if she’s learned anything from it.

Maybe there's something to that old saying that "a conservative is just a Liberal who got mugged."

You make a terrific point. There is a calculated risk taking by advancement hungry individuals that when coupled with the media employer passion for video “theater” and blood and guts to show on the 5:00 news feed virtualy guarantees this sort of incident occurs.

Actually, you took my thought and ran with it farther than I had. I never really thought that far out. I'm sure Lara wouldn't have quite viewed it like that.... except for the one part about calculating the risk. Her quotes from 2001 tell me that her calculation, and her trust in herself as an experienced journalist, simply wasn't enough.

Of course, your ran-with point is actually interesting. How much more savage are we becoming? Will we reach the debasement of the Roman Coleseum, only with HDTV and news events being the bloodsoaked theater?

One only has to look at the Totally Shocking Video shows to answer that question.

Sad to say but this is to be expected in the muslim world where our women are equal to our men.

Next time think before sending a women into NOMAN’s Land.

I tend to agree in principle. Were I a CBS executive there is no way I’d allow a woman into such a situation, and I don’t give a crap about the “career implications.” Putting a woman in that kind of situation not only endangers her own life, but the lives of everyone else sent to “protect” her.

There was no need for this to have happened, and no more reason other than “PC’s” affect on what otherwise may have been mature judgment that it did happen.

Those people are animals, and we’ve seen it dozens of times over the years. If they’re not raping innocent women, they’re raping young boys. If they’re not raping young boys they’re murdering anyone who disagrees with them, or critizes them, or dares to even draw a cartoon of their “god.”

The woman works for idiots, and everyone involved with putting her in that dangerous situation, putting her and those with her at needless and ridiculous risk, should be fired.

A dangerous element? I thought this was democracy in action. I guess it was, she voted against the assault and the others voted for it.

Unfortunately, today's Muslim world in general is a "dangerous element", and any form of popular government founded there can be expected to behave accordingly.

Indeed, this is pure democracy in its most natural form - the very democracy our own Founding Fathers were wary of. I wish our leaders had never gotten it into their heads that democracy is what this country stands for. Democracy and government by consent of the governed are two different things. We stand for the rule of law - democracy is just another form of the rule of men.

Ultimately, though, our leaders need to realize that this isn't about "democracy" vs. despotism - that was the Cold War and World War II. This is about civilization vs. barbarism, and, tyrants though they may have been, Mubarak and the generals have for the most part been on the side of civilization.

It shouldn't be ignored that it was the military, not the mob, who ultimately saved Ms. Logan's skin.

Sorry for her, but, females do NOT belong in combat zones, period.

The real question is whether things like this will wake the MSM up to the realities of the Muslim world.

Dude.

You've known the Liberal Media long enough to know better than to even ASK the question.

Bush, Global Warming, Sarah Palin, or the lack of Union Card Check will be the purported reason.

...Lara Logan was attacked and sexually assaulted...
Well golly, let's be as vague as possible.
Did they just grab a feel from the crowd or was she held down and raped?
Lousy reporting.

It is not clear at all she was raped. More likely molested but you can’t tell from the article. They say she was beaten as well.

I don’t think there is any point in generalizing against a whole people, however, in reports from people from country’s with a sizeable muslim population, they really despise the muslims. They often claim the muslims are behind drug dealing and other crimes, carry out blood feuds and the like. It’s not a pretty picture.

Raped, sodomized, beaten and she’s still in the hospital.

A little looking around on the internet reveals that she was raped, for a pretty long time, and by more than one person.

This took place after the previous Reporter beatings. It’s bizarre that CBS would send Logan into the crowd after that. I hope she’s okay.

Barry should have listened to Hosni and permitted the peaceful transition to take place. Barry prefers the mob rule endorsed by his friend/mentor, Domestic Terrorist Bill Ayers.

Those guys regard uncovered women as whores and fair game.

And, take it from someone who knows, blond hair, blue eyes only makes it worse. Why did they EVER send someone who would stand out like a sore thumb - but CBS hasn’t been known for making smart decisions.

I have seen and lived through some dangerous personal behavior in my lifetime. Employers should be responsible for workplace exposure to risk, but individuals need to see their safety begins and ends with their willingness to utilize and insist upon proper training, equipment and support. The same holds true for personal conduct outside of work — we make our own outcomes.

The nervous humor in tragedy, the laugh at the injury, is a part of understanding performance art and theater. Electronic media makes it all that more reproducible and marketable.

A life more centered in prayerful tasks is my goal — I find it hard to watch the adult channels on cable when occupied in that manner — its a fact.
