Gov. Rick Scott of Florida on Wednesday rejected plans for a high speed rail line between Tampa and Orlando, in the process turning down $2 billion in federal funds and a key piece of President Obamas goal of building a national high-speed rail network.
Florida is the third state with a newly elected Republican governor to turn down a portion of the administrations high-speed rail project, joining John Kasich of Ohio and Scott Walker of Wisconsin.

the least we could do..consider it done
They were promoting their Monorail in Disneyland 50 years ago as the next big thing.
“The big print giveth, and the small print taketh away.”
Some things never change.
After accepting the billions for such a boondoggle then building the thing, the state must then cough it up (huuuwah! (hairball deluxe)) for the MAINTENANCE of the system, which could easily out pace revenues.
No thank you!
“CA is crazy if they think the san fran line will work. “
I guess I have to deal with people here one at a time:
They know FULL WELL that the train will be an economic DISASTER. These are NOT stupid people, they are not misguided people (even if we wish they were), they are simply EVIL PEOPLE, looking for ways to throw money down a sinkhole and weaken our economy as much as possible, prior to getting thrown out of office.
It’s sad, be we all have to deal with the fact that there are home-grown Americans that happen to HATE this country and want to bring it down a few notches. That is a fact. I went to college with them - lots of fun to drink with - dangerous as hell.
Universal, Disney, Lego and Busch (now some foreign company) can pitch in to build the “Theme Park Express” with stops at both airports and it would be a huge success with no taxpayer funds. It’s only about an hour from Tampa-Orlando by car so it doesn’t even have to be particularly “high speed”. Disney can even build out the Beachway to Canaveral and link their ships.
Win-win!
Not sure why the big push for the Tampa Airport to Disney. Orlando has its own airport to handle Disney traffic.
Republican Sen. Marco Rubio-
“He’s just wrecked it. ... He’s taking our state and our community down the wrong track.”
Another phony RINO.
Oh, please. That has to be one of the most obviously cherry-picked quotes I have ever seen.
Lets see the full remark, not some edited junk.
This line doesn't include going to Tampa International. It just dumps passenger(s) in downtown Tampa.
Legoland won't benefit much from the line since the "station" in Polk County/Winter Haven area would be at least 30 minute bus ride/car rental ride from the station to Legoland.
Thus you have Tampa flight arrivals taking a bus or taxi from TIA to train station - to stop somewhere in Polk County/Lakeland/Winter Haven area which is a midpoint on the line - stop at Disney and stop at Orlando airport.
Rent a car and be to Disney in half the time for less money.
And who would pay to take the high speed rail 10 miles from Disney to Orlando MCO when Disney takes them there for free. And most of them have to turn in a rental car because they went to Universal, Sea World etc, as well as Disney and needed a car.
All the usual cast of Characters are crawling out of the woodwork and squealing like stuck pigs over the loss of this boondoggle, make work, create union jobs debacle cum blight cum black-hole-sucking-tax-dollars which makes the Big Dig look cost effective by comparison.
That quote is from Kevin Beckner, Hillsborough County commissioner. Rubio’s quote is above his name.
You have to wonder if it's only Tampanians who are going to Disney or to Orlando airport. Tampa has one of the worlds most effective international airports on the planet with the parking garage on top of the terminal???
Double faced Bill Nelson's head (a scull full of mush) is about to explode by Scott's common sense decision!!!
They even have TWO airports there for that kind of traffic!!!
Are YOU sure that was ALL he said, or do you more trust YOUR source where it’s printed???
The drive is less than 2 hours or about $15 in gas for the whole family. I’ll bet a ticket would be $25 per person between the two cities and then it would still be subsidized.
Obama needs to take a vacation then he can't think of ways to spend our money. Perhaps he could visit the troops which we hear nothing about..Armys 101st Airborne Division lost 6 soldiers which were killed by a recruit from the Afghan forces.
The only trip Obama should really be thinking about is the "high speed" trip home for our military overseas.
Tampa International Airport is NOT on the line.
Just to stretch the line from downtown Tampa to TIA would cost multi-multi billions even at "Eminent Domain" prices.
Thanks, Gov. Scott.
I also called our Congressman Crenshaw (about the Pence amendment, to thank him for supporting it) and let him know I’m with the governor on this one.
And am getting ready to call Congressman Mica to ask him to stand down on it. NO to taxpayer $$$ on pork projects.
(SNIP) Supporters of high-speed rail in Florida are scrambling to salvage a planned link between Tampa and Orlando after Gov. Rick Scott announced Wednesday he was refusing $2.4 billion in federal money for the project. The rejection drew swift condemnation from most Democrats and some Republicans...
>>>>...U.S. Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the House Transportation Infrastructure Committee, and U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., said they are still looking into ways to get the system built.
Mica said he was disappointed and somewhat surprised by Scott’s decision.
“This is more than a hiccup,” said Mica, whose district includes St. Johns County. “But there are still ways to do it.”
He might soon get a trip to Githmo for permanent residence???
