Boy Refuses to Wrestle Girl for US Title

A standout high school wrestler in the United States has refused to compete against a girl at a major tournament because he says grappling with girls conflicts with his religious beliefs.

Year 10 student Joel Northrup, the son of a church minister, forfeited any chance of becoming champion when he defaulted on his match against year nine student Cassy Herkelman at the Iowa state high school wrestling tournament.

Northrup, who is home-schooled but was wrestling for a local high school, said in a press release that he withdrew because he does not think boys and girls should compete in the sport.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times," he said.

"As a matter of conscience and my faith I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner."

Herkelman and another female competitor Megan Black made history by being the first females to compete in the competition in its 85-year history.

Northrup had also defaulted three years earlier when he was scheduled to wrestle Black.

"If it's his religion and he's strong in his religion, then I just respect that," Black said.

Northrup added that he respected the achievements of Herkelman and Black.

"It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other high school sports in Iowa," he said.

Herkelman's father, Bill, told CNN: "My understanding is that they've got strict convictions (as a family), and I respect them".

"I don't have any ill will toward them and I don't think it's any kind of boycott about her being a girl," he said.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, more than 6000 girls competed in wrestling in 2009-10 — compared with nearly 275,000 boys. Though most states require girls to wrestle boys, California, Hawaii, Texas, Washington and Tennessee sponsor girls-only high school wrestling tournaments.

Can't blame him. The second he gets rough with her, he'll either be in lawsuit hell, or be charged with criminal behavior.

This is the least worst option for this young man.

This is insane. Not what the strong willed young man did, but having boys wrestle girls. Can you say grope-fest? And that’s just normal moves. Have there been any sexual harrassment lawsuits (”He touched me inappropriately”)? If not, there will be.

WTH is the matter with people?

Seems like a non-story to me - nobody seems to be upset or offended, or asking for the rules to be changed. The young man is standing by his convictions, and living with the consequences, seemingly without complaint. I salute him for that.

If I were him, and If shes cute, I would wrestle. If she looks like an East Berlin swimmer, I would pass.

I agree. Boys and girls should not be wrestling each other. Its a bad idea and frankly I was suprised to see that anybody is allowing it.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times," he said.

I went to a high school wrestling meet that had male and female competing with one another. To me it was shocking because, in any other environment, the males would be arrested for assault. No body part is exempt. It is a very bad idea.

Furthermore, on the subject of male/female competition, one boy not to be outdone by a larger female competitor, broke his femur bone, attempting to throw her off his back.

It makes one wonder to what extent women win because they are given a little more leeway. Male/female wrestling competition is inappropriate.

Why should sports of any kind be segregated? Make women compete at all levels in every sport for athletic scholarships. This would end the favortism and forced regulations on “higher education” to fund women’s sports.

You be the judge. Whether you agree or not with what she is doing you have to admit, she is in great physical shape for a girl her age.

A highschool wrestler in California was charged with sexual assault for a “butt grip” move that was deemed too “penetrating.” And they were both guys. I agree. This is a lawsuit just waiting to happen. The school’s athletic director needs to have his head examined. So does that father of that girl.

He should have whipped her ass with malice.

Here's the problem. Even though the feminazis want us to think that men and women are equal, and thus should be allowed to compete with one another, the fact remains that they would fully and totally support any girl who engages in this sport with a boy and then cries out "sexual herassment," "rape," or "he touched me there," regardless of the motivations for or the truth behind such accusations. The boy ends up being in a huge heap of trouble that has the potential to significantly impact his life in a negative way. I have no doubt that this power imbalance in part contributes the "success" that girls have when they wrestle boys.

Compounding the problem is that whenever a female makes such accusations against a male, the male is presumed to not only be guilty, but to be guilty as sin. It is then up to the male to prove that he is innocent, instead of the female to prove that he is guilty.

I would not have any objections to others engaging in these types of sports if the playing field was indeed level. But of course, we know it isn't.

“Already posted and just as dumb today as yesterday. He should have whipped her ass with malice.”

This young man is already smart enough not to sacrifice his principles for a meaningless high school trophy. The best way to stop intersex competition is for the boys to refuse to participate.

In Iowa, wrestling IS a religion. So I can see how he could be conflicted.
