States Revise Rules on Driver's Licenses for Illegal Immigrants as National ID Approaches
Fox News ^ | February 17, 2011 | Stephen Clark

The last three states to allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses -- Washington, New Mexico and Utah -- are now steeped in battles to revise their laws as a federal deadline approaches for all 50 states to issue identity cards that meet a new national standard.

States must be in compliance by May with the regulations laid out in the 2005 REAL ID Act. The law, a recommendation of the Sept. 11 commission that investigated the 2001 terror attacks, creates a national security standard for state-issued identification cards to be used for purposes like boarding airplanes and entering federal buildings.

Originally intended as a counterterrorism tool, REAL ID has had an unintended side effect that has won support of immigration enforcement advocates -- it requires driver's licenses issued to immigrants to expire at the same time as their stay in the U.S., invalidating the licenses of immigrants who overstay their visas.

"You are making (it) very difficult for them to assimilate," said Janice Kephart, director of national security policy at the Center for Immigration Studies said of illegal immigrants. "The inability to assimilate plus enforcement will drive a natural attrition over time."

hy should Federal trough feeders in their expensive buildings be armored/guarded more than the taxpayers who earned the money that supports those trough feeders?

Since when does the public servant not only live better, and retire better, than the public?

And how did the trough feeders become more worthy of protection than the American citizenry?

Fine. You want all the Beeners to have a get out of jail free license in the US, we will still know who they are. They have a tendency to stick out.

“it requires driver’s licenses issued to immigrants to expire at the same time as their stay in the U.S., invalidating the licenses of immigrants who overstay their visas.”

Ugh. Could border security be any more stupid?! Once they have driver’s licenses, they can use them for many more things than driving.

Here in Washington State, I’ll bet this has our governor upset. Our Democrats love Illegals. Here when you sign up for a driver’s license, you’re automatically registered to vote. Our RINO Secretary of State refuses to investage registering Illegals to vote even when he was provided with evidence. Here in Western Washington it takes a near miracle to get a genuine Conservative into office, and we are over-run with Illegals who are automatically given every taxpayer-subsidized freeby imaginable. Police services have been cut to the bone, and vital services for the truly needy were cut, but not a dime was cut from goodies for Illegals.

Having a national ID handed out to illegal immigrants is a catastrophe.

Arguing that they will ‘expire’ is a complete and total joke.

Up to 17,500 individuals who couldn't prove their legal immigration status were cut from Washington's Basic Health program today after the Legislature passed the 2011 Second Supplemental Budget.

The article says that driver's licenses will expire at the same time as the visa. That means that illegals won't be getting them, since they don't have visas. If they'd gone to the trouble of getting visas, they wouldn't be illegal now, would they?

This woman missed her calling. It's obvious that she has a true talent for stand-up comedy!

Just renewed my license in Oregon. They now require proofs of citizenship, Social Security number, and residence. Walked in on a Monday and had less than a 5 minute wait. The DMV staff were all upbeat and helpful. Big change from last time I was in and felt like I’d crossed the border into Mexico.

You know what? Fine. Point well taken.

What happens when they overstay?

Well, that's where a lot of the problem is, isn't it?

My frustration is that we already have immigration laws on the books, and the politicians step in the way of them being enforced because they want the illegal votes. And then, they think of even more ways to reward illegal immigration and call it "immigration reform," thinking that they're pulling a fast one on us, the taxpayers.

What I’d like to see is border security that works to prevent people from coming into the country in the first place. That should be the first line of defense. Measures like this accomplish the opposite.
