ST. PETERSBURG — Veteran St. Petersburg police officer David S. Crawford was shot and killed Monday as he and another officer investigated a report of a prowler at a downtown residence.
Crawford's killing came one month after two St. Petersburg police officers were shot dead in the line of duty — the first police officers killed in the city in 31 years.
A massive manhunt was underway for the killer Tuesday morning, with several downtown blocks closed and police checking cars coming and going.
It was unclear if Crawford's killer was injured in an exchange of gunfire.
The shooting occurred just after 10:30 p.m. near Eighth Street and Third Avenue S. Crawford, a 25-year veteran of the department, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
I was just reading about this NN- the SPPD must truly be in shock. Prayers for them all.
Must be some pretty dangerous prowlers down there lately. Most would simply flee and prowl another night. Illegales?

Police initially received a call of a suspicious person or prowler who was in the 700 block of Third Avenue South. The caller told police the suspect had a brick in his hand and they feared he might use it to break into a building to commit a burglary.The caller described the suspect as a black male who was 18 to 20 years old and wearing a black hoodie, Harmon said.
The suspect may have lost one of his shoes leaving the scene, police spokesman Mike Puetz said. Details on the type of shoe were not immediately available.
Have brick, will shoot. Straaaaaaange.
Being black doesn’t necessarily mean being “authentic” Afro-American. Mexico has its share of mestizos in every hue.
Mexican is low probability in that area of St. Pete.
So sad folks choose such violence...God Bless the slain officers..
And also low (until now) was the probability of an officer getting shot by a brick wielding black skinned prowler. This smells like something more. New gang? Initiation?

South side of St. Pete is a war zone.
IF the home owner were armed, he would be shooting from the inside out, and had a better chance of killing the perp.
Instead the perp shoots from a protected position, and gets the drop on the cops.

Perp is in custody. Turned himself in. 16 year Nicholas Lindsey with prior arrest history. Will be charged w/ 1st Degree Murder.

What would the response be if it was a white kid who shot a black cop? Nothing like what I wrote above!It’d be the total opposite!
