Harry Reid: ‘The time has come for us to outlaw prostitution’

(CARSON CITY — Sen. Harry Reid on Tuesday called for “an adult conversation” about prostitution in Nevada, saying it is an impediment to economic development because it discourages businesses from moving here.

“Nevada needs to be known as the first place for innovation and investment – not as the last place where prostitution is still legal,” he said in a speech to the Nevada Legislature.

Reid told the assembled lawmakers that he met recently with a group of business leaders who run data centers for technology companies. They visited Storey County in search of a new location for their businesses but “one of the businessmen in that meeting told me he simply couldn’t believe that one of the biggest businesses in the county he was considering for his new home has legal prostitution

I was born and raised in a small town (pop ~25000) where prostitution, while “illegal” was pretty much wide open. Every kid knew where all the houses were located and many of us passed the phone numbers around so we could make prank calls to the girls.

Sailors, businessmen and others would drive 2-3 hours to patronize our little town’s girls. Business was booming on weekends. The city was in good financial shape and there was very little crime.

At about 16, my family moved away and that year a very popular businessman ran for mayor and won election. One of his first acts was to outlaw and crack down on prostitution. In a matter of months, the city was in dire financial straits, businesses were hurting and incomes had dried up.

Real smooth move. Almost killed the town. Fortunately it still had the lumber business, but that only lasted until the logging industry was shut down. Double whammy.

I’ve always wondered what it would have been like if that mayor hadn’t been elected and the town was allowed to prosper.

Oh well... nobody will ever know. But they can be comforted that they’re not living on those “immoral” dollars that that business brought in.

FU Dingy Harry. Shut down prostitution and see how much more you can dry up employment, businesses and investments. What a maroon!

I live in N Nevada.

We need to outlaw Harry Reid. He has gone well past his ‘expiration date’, IMO.

he started life as a bag-man for the Mob, carrying $$$ from businesses that paid vig to the Mob. He lived very close to a bordello, where he learned to swim in their pool as a kid.

Harry has all of his interests in Clark County. I believe that Clark County voted years ago to push the bordellos out of that country. Sounds more like Harry is jealous that at least a couple of the remaining Nevada counties are getting invome from the LEGAL bordellos there.

Harry referenced his “fact” that a ‘high-tech company wished to move to the large Tahoe-Reno Industrial center at I-80 & USA Parkway, just east of Reno. Harry says that the owners of this alleged company balked at relocating themselves ‘right next door’ to 2 bordellos.

Lance Gilman- the owner of T-R-I says he has NEVER had a single company or person wishing to discuss joining the development at TRI in the past 10 years ever say a single word about ‘the legal bordellos’ that are a part of Nevada & it’s history.

“Right next door” in Nevada can mean as much as 5 miles. IIRC, from many trips thru that area, the on’off ramps for USA Parkway —both east & west—for I-80 lead into the industrial park. A couple of bands of wild horses are in that area.

Then I-80 -—to the east—following the Truckee River— bends a bit to the NE. There is a small range of hills between TRI & the bordellos, which I think are about 4 miles east. When I next go there, I will check my speedometer.

Anyway— I am pretty darn sure that no one at TRI can view any part of these LEGAL bordellos from any part of TRI.

This state also has all kinds of gambling. Was there any mention of that, Harry???

IMO, Dirty Harry is attacking some of the workers who have supported him the most in the past.

The locals are not happy one little bit about his making this speech at the Nevada legislature during their bi-annual 120 day session. They have precious little time & have a really full plate without Harry & his interference.

If there is any reason why a high tech company would go elsewhere other than N Nevada, I think it would be the crime problems & the lower level of education in general.
The area is saturated with retirees & those who have lengthy judicial records for misbehavior.

If I had know how bad it is where I moved—I would have gone elsewhere.

Break-ins & burglaries in my small valley went up 700% in 2010 alone. We all are more alert now & we are definately more careful who we let onto our properties.

Prostitution causes less problems in Nevada than in any other place I’ve ever lived.

If he keeps talking like this, he’s going to lose the Mafia’s endorsement.

You've got it backwards. The Mafia hates legal prostitution, because it cuts into their business of illegal prostitution. They probably paid Harry to say this.

Yeah, and we all know that there will be less of it, if it becomes illegal. Just like there are less gun crimes where guns are illegal, and there were less problems with alcohol during Prohibition.

Go home little girl, your nanny (state) is calling.

The Bible says that is a sin.
When you make prostitution legal, you are endorsing sin.

I would worry less about school busses driving past brothels, and more about the morality of the brothel invading the Senate

There is an old joke about a union shop steward who travels to Nevada looking for some sin.
He goes to the first brothel and asks if it is union, or non-union. The pimp says it is non-union. The union man askes how much the girls get: The girls get 15%, the house gets 85 % says the pimp.
“that is unfair to labor! I will take my custom elsewhere!”
He goes to one after another, and it seems most of the brothels are non-union.
Finally, he gets to the dingy brothel at the end of the street. “Is this union or non-union?”
The madame answers “This is a union shop.”
“How much do the girls get?”
“The girls get 85%, the house gets 15%.”
“Well!” the shop steward says, “ I would like a few hours with that cute redhead over there.”
“Well I bet you would” says the madame.” but Rosie over here, (gestures to an 80 year old fat women with 3 rotten teeth) Rosie has seniority!”

I submit that not banning prostitution is not endorsing. Regulating prostitution does not endorse, but rather bans the practices that are not permitted. (such as the practice of congress with customers that are obviously diseased).

Endorsing would be putting in a requirement for each female resident to serve a certain number of customers in a brothel. Endorsing would be a requirement that each resident must purchase a certain number of priced services, just as required insurance coverage requires purchase of specified services. That would be endorsing.

Well, let's see, there's lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. I don't remember prostitution being listed among the 7 deadly sins, but it's an expected result of lust. So, you believe that all of these must be outlawed, do you?

The interesting thing about these sins is that they are all matters between the sinner and God. When you presume to stand in judgement, in God's place, you are committing the sin of pride.

I guess that sort of says what jobs are “green” jobs we could expect should the government take it farther.

But I think the main reason that some legislators argue for banning prostitution is the interest of public health and safety, they are only concerned with being able to say “It’s not my fault for the people contracting STDs, because they were doing an illegal act to contract the disease (Getting laid with a prostitute)”. Anyways, that would be their argument, not mine.

The interesting thing about these sins is that they are all matters between the sinner and God. When you presume to stand in judgement, in God’s place, you are committing the sin of pride.

The consequences are within the interest of public safety and public trust, but then again, even those priorities seem slightly out of whack. My personal issues in my mind (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride) are yes, between myself and God, but the acts I commit out of those inclinations are a matter of law, because the consequences of these acts affect people besides myself, and I should confess and make the best amends possible for these wrongdoings to others. People come up with the idea that certain inclinations only hurt themselves, but with decent experience, one will find that this idea is very seldom true. That’s where the law comes in, if something a person does (prostitution, heavy drinking) affects someone else (STDs, auto accidents) in the case of either an STD, many of which are largely incurable, hits someone, or a person is permanently crippled/killed by an auto crash, who pays for the damages? Point is government does not want to accept responsibility for the fact that some person got an STD from some prostitute, so they make it a crime, and they make it a crime called DUI for people who drive under the influence of alcohol.

Interesting argument. It would seem using this logic that government would have a vested interest in stopping premarital sex. I think reasonable people would object to this interference in our personal lives by government.

Prostitution is one issue where my libertarian instincts kick in. I had a criminal justice teacher who once pointed out that what is the real difference between taking a woman on a date and spending $100 and hoping to get sex. Or paying a woman $100 for sex and skipping the rest.

I know the argument will be what about people who are forced or children who are forced. Well we don't outlaw all business because some use child labor, we just enforce the laws against those business that violate the law.

Legal prostitution (in Nevada) has a much lower rate of STD transmission than illegal prostitution. There has never been a case of AIDS among legal prostitutes in Nevada. The places with the highest STD rates are Reno and Las Vegas, where prostitution is illegal, and whores walk the streets and casinos.

Where prostitution is legal, the whores get frequent health inspections, and they stay in the whore houses, which are in secluded areas.

Let me get this straight, you support the homosexual agenda AND legalized prostitution.

You are really on the wrong forum.
