Ind. GOP leader: No compromise with absent Dems

INDIANAPOLIS – A political stalemate in Indiana showed no signs of ending anytime soon as House Democrats met privately Wednesday in an out-of-state hotel and Republicans refused to negotiate away their legislative agenda to lure them back.
While the tactic mimicked one used a week earlier by Senate Democrats in Wisconsin who fled to delay a vote on an anti-union bill, the Indiana Democrats said their protest was not about one GOP-backed proposal but a slate of them. In both states, Democrats don't have the votes to defeat the proposals, but by not showing up they can prevent the required quorum necessary to call the measures for a vote.
"We want to see a little more cooperation on everything," Patrick Bauer, the House Democratic leader, told reporters by phone from a hotel in Urbana, Ill. "I know they don't think it's necessary, but thank God the Constitution said you have a way of fighting tyranny."
Although Bauer declines to list all the sticking points, the vote that sparked Tuesday's walkout involved Indiana's "right-to-work" legislation that prohibits union membership from being a condition of employment. The walkout effectively killed that measure, but the Democrats were pushing to end other aspects of Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels' agenda, including aggressive education changes such as vouchers, the expansion of charter schools and restrictions on teacher collective bargaining.
House Speaker Brian Bosma said he talked to Bauer by phone Wednesday morning to tell him, "he needed to get back here."
"The negotiation takes place on the floor of the House," Bosma said. "This isn't the old back room deals that Rep. Bauer's used to cutting."

Daniels already caved - a Bush RINO republican.
Why? They might as well go for the 8 hole. If it takes four months to kill the GOP agenda so be it.
Its a small price to pay to make the GOP look impotent and make Daniels look like the pansy he is now.
I guess elections don’t matter after all unless demorats win.
With all that is going on, I don’t want to hear any more about what a respectable job a public school teacher has.
I can’t imagine what dems would be saying if the GOP had done this.
Thank you. I think the Dems really got outmaneuvered here. By appearing to cave temporarily on one issue, the GOP made themselves look far more reasonable to voters, and made the Dems look like spoiled brats who want everything. That will increase political pressure by the public on those Democrats, and I think they'll eventually be forced to cave. Because as a practical matter, Illinois would not cooperate in trying to return them forcibly.
Then, after the GOP gets all the other stuff in the books, they'll turn undivided attention on the critical right to work legislation. It's a more tactical approach rather than just charging in headfirst in what may be a more emotionally satisfying, but ultimately less successful, legislative approach. But that means you're clearly right -- you have to see the end game before concluding that the GOP really "caved".
Perhaps the governor did not feel the RTW was a slam dunk with the people of Indiana at this time. He concedes it, and the democrats still won't come back. It really shows the lack of good faith that the dems are dealing in. I think in WI they are really only fighting over one issue and the GOP can ram all kinds of stuff through without the quorum. Rules are different in Indiana, so you devise a different strategy.
What definition does each state use to define a vacant legislative seat?
If the Dems don’t come back within that time, the seat is vacated or abandoned, and the governor calls for new elections for those open seats only.
You bet the rats will scurry back.
Someone needs to play hardblall with these clowns—yesterday.
Mitch Daniels needs to cancell their credit cards. They are likely spending IN taxpayer money on hotels, food, rental cars, you name it.
If I didn’t show up to work, I’d be fired. I want the names and districts these asshats represent.
Democrats can collect pay without working.

All of these folks can continue their stands and the South reaps the rewards.

But wait... the LEGISLATURE represents the people of Indiana, that being their JOB and all, and THEY felt the timing was right. Are you saying the newly elected legislature is out of touch with the people’s desires, whereas the governor first elected in 2005 knows them better?

The evidence is that Daniels’ strategy is a big FAIL. Sorry... I’m just going by what I’m seeing with my own eyes. Having gone soft once, they will walk all over him.
Bauer is the tyranny.
I am not familiar with Indiana politics but it seems to be more conservative than the others in that belt. I have not seen where the legislature has backed down. If the Governor wants to play patsy let him. Wouldn’t he still sign what reaches his desk........
In the good old days the sheriff would have already picked up some of their family members to serve time in the stocks.
What happened is the people decided to play headgames with the legislature so they gave the Republicans enough seats to pass any law they want, but they gave the Democrats enough seats to gum up the works.
You got a problem with the will of the people discuss it with them during the election.
Both the Speaker of the House and the Senate President made statements today they will not pursue RTW this year.
...The RNC should produce a political ad condemning public officials who flee from their resposibilities and refuse to do the jobs they were elected to do:
-Woman in line at drive thru, yelling at the speaker "Hello? Is anyone there?
-Picture of storefront, locked. Sign in the window says "Be Back - whenever"
Pictures of countertops in banks, doctor's offices, checkout stations, etc - all unmanned.
-Defendant frantically looking around the Courtroom, and at the empty chair next to him, as the Judge asks "Mr. Jones, are you represented by Counsel?"
Students in classroom - some misbehaving and throwing objects, others cowering. There's no one at the teacher's desk...
-Audio of answering machine - "This is Senator ________, I'm not available right now but if you leave your name and number I might get back to you eventually"
Voiceover says "Are you being served?
End the ad with a list of AWOL Senators. "If you think you deserve better, let's put them out of a job"
Did it ever occur to you that Daniels had a different agenda? He told congressional leader to hold off on RTW long before the Dems vacated the state. He did indicate that RTW was on his agenda but for a different time. In this case it was the Republican Congressional leaders that blew it, not Daniels. Daniels didn’t cave.
There is no reason to spread misinformation.
