Bob Woodward is flat-out disgusted with Donald Rumsfelds memoir.
Rumsfeld's memoir is one big clean-up job, a brazen effort to shift blame to others -- including President Bush -- distort history, ignore the record or simply avoid discussing matters that cannot be airbrushed away, Woodward writes on Tom Rickss Best Defense blog. It is a travesty, and I think the rewrite job won't wash.

oh there is way more, Rummy is givin every last dime of profit this book earns to our military, and that in and of it’s self irks folk like Pansey Bob to death
A serious case of sour grapes. Rummy’s book is documented with exhaustive footnotes. Bobby’s books rely on anonymous sources and imaginary conversations.
Yes - you are right. Honestly I tried to get through Silent Coup once (long time ago) and couldn’t do it. Might be worth giving it another go.
Woodward has always been a shill for Colin Powell. That’s what this reaction” is all about.
"Curious" is the right word. Woodward had connections with the intelligence community - he was a spook asset placed in the media for a purpose. There have been many other media personalities who are the same.
Which clearly demand more specificity if the accusations are expected to rise anywhere above a schoolyard "nuh uh." Rumsfeld takes great pains in opening his book to claim extensive documentation, even so far as to create and maintain a supporting website, from his archive of personal notes.
What is Woodward offering?
His ability to channel William Casey.
Woodward is a first class jackass in his own right, but Rumsfeld isn’t much better. I will not dispute the former SecDef’s memoirs because he wrote them as he saw them. I do not subscribe to the general consensus on FreeRepublic that Rumsfeld was the greatest thing since sliced bread. In my humble opinion he was barely adequate in his job as Sec Def. Many of us on active duty at the time were happy to see him go. Unfortunately we replaced him with an even worse assclown in Gates.
Agree THSR - from another (adopted) tarheel.
Bob Woodward and the WaPo are like yesterday. Get over it, Bobbie. You’ve been coasting through life on “All the President’s Men”for decades. Nixon is dead. He’s not coming back for an encore. Don Rumsfeld is not Richard Nixon. You’re taking yourself too seriously.
Woodward offers “gotch’a” “journalism” over trivial matters.
SMMFD, BW.
Yep, he does sound like he needs his diaper changed.
Such an assumption would be severely mistaken.
FreeRepublic started out as, and to some degree always will be, a place for critical news consumers to dissect and vilify bad argumentation and "advocacy journalism."
While it has lost much of that analytical edge with the rise of "popular" conservatism, forgetting where FR came from make it little more than a right wing version of DU.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Woodward wouldn’t know the truth if it ran up and chomped him on the ass.
And what about Rummy did you not like? Just wondering.
So, we have a thoroughly documented version of the events versus Woodward's view from inside Colin Powell's anus. Hmm, which to believe.
This is the root of Andrea Mitchell's meltdown interviewing Rumsfeld. She referenced the media template drawn from Thomas Ricks and Bob Woodward. Rumsfeld pointed out that they weren't in the room when these discussions were held. Asked why should he subscribe to their accounts when he was there? Andrea dodged by switching to the Gerald Ford assassination attempt.
Me like.
If he’s seventy years old, that would be “hasn’t produced anything useful in seven decades.” Except I’m not sure if his local sewage treatment plant sells any fertilizer.
