Bob Woodward is flat-out disgusted with Donald Rumsfelds memoir.
Rumsfeld's memoir is one big clean-up job, a brazen effort to shift blame to others -- including President Bush -- distort history, ignore the record or simply avoid discussing matters that cannot be airbrushed away, Woodward writes on Tom Rickss Best Defense blog. It is a travesty, and I think the rewrite job won't wash.

Strange guy Woodward - I wager there’s more than a few things we don’t know about him.
To: US Navy Vet
Translation: Bob Woodward is upset because Donald Rumsfeld sold more books than he did.

"The Washington Post reporter outlines contradictions in Rumsfelds version of events, including when the administration began focusing on Iraq, when the decision to go to war with the country was made, and on whom the responsibility of post-war planning ultimately fell"
Clearly major issues here.

As you read the WP article and note the unsupported assertions, accusations, and name calling without reference to specific events, you get the feeling that Woodward is being personal, nit-picky, and as usual, unfair. He mastered the cheap shot long ago. Even if Rummy does make an error here and there, at least he was in the room where the issues were decided; that’s more than The Woody can say.
Most all of Woodward’s information came second and third-hand.

Agreed. Woodward spent so much time working for the Washinton Post there's no amount of penance he can ever pay to keep himself out of the lowest levels of Hades.
So who is he to criticize Rumsfeld?

the book “silent coup” details some of what’s known about woodward.
his rise is curious. with no experience in journalism, the wa wa post hired him.
and then all hell broke loose.

Yes, those are key issues. It wouldn’t surprise me if Rumsfeld was whitewashing.
