Amazon warns it will leave California affiliates over tax law

Paul Demery

Managing Editor

The retailer will cut ties with affiliates if the state passes sales tax legislation.

Amazon.com Inc. told California tax officials this week that it will cut ties with thousands of California affiliates if the state passes pending legislation requiring the online retailer to collect sales tax from California customers.

Amazon, contending that four bills pending in the California Legislature appear to be unconstitutional or would “construct Trojan horses” leading to unconstitutional regulation, said passage of any of the bills into law would compel the world’s largest online retailer to end its advertising relationships with more than 10,000 California-based participants in Amazon’s affiliate program. Amazon, No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, compensates program participants when they refer consumers who make purchases on Amazon.com.

State tax officials estimate that Amazon’s termination of its California affiliate program would slash by 50% the revenue the state expects to raise under the pending legislation, according to a statement by state senator George Runner, who is a member of the state’s Board of Equalization, the state agency that oversees sales tax collection.

Now *there* is a really weird mental image....LOL

[How much Peanut Butter Crunch did you buy? I might come over]....:)

You *cannot* beat Amazon for Meyenberg goat milk powder.

I use it on my dogs’ meals and they’re mad for it.

It’s *half* the price there than everywhere else.

And *books*?

Stuff Borders wants $40 for, I get for .99 + shipping.

Can’t beat them with a stick.

Ah yes. It’s often funny to watch liberal companies slowly be stripped of their principles in the free market.

Google's "Don't be evil" translates as "Evil is OK with us" in Chinese.

Well done by Amazon.

Companies so often just knuckle under to bullying by various governmental bodies. I am glad to see Amazon isn't merely submitting to the usual California governmental claptrap.

All Amazon need do is post on it’s website:

“Sorry. We cannot ship to California. These are the names of the legislators who support taxing mail order:

Name 1
Name 2
Name 3
...”

You get the idea...

“with more than 10,000 California-based participants in Amazon’s affiliate program.”

Let’s name this right -

“with more than 10,000 California-based SMALL BUSINESSES that participate in Amazon’s affiliate program.”

These small business owners would still pay state income taxes.

No matter how much you’re taxed, it’s never enough for thieving leftists.

See Post #31.

They will still ship to California - they will just not have any books purchased on Amazon come from California book stores. Thus no CA sales tax - because they wanted MORE tax.

It is like killing the goose laying the golden egg because she wasn’t laying silver and platinum ones as well.

Years ago when Michigan implemented a tobacco tax (the one before the last one). I believe about 7years ago, I was in discussion with the county health director. He was commenting how the tax was a great thing in that all kinds of money would be directed to county level health programs. It was anticipated a 100 million dollar increase in revenue. I told him that it would most likely result in a loss in revenue as two things would happen:1; people would quit; 2; people would go out of state for their smokes.
Michigan cigarette tax revenue dropped by about 110 million and the number one ticket issued by the Coldwater State Police post was untaxed cigarettes. Coldwater is located just inside the Indiana/MI border.
Liberals just don’t see the big pictured. In this case it was cheaper to drive 100 miles to Indiana for smokes. The tax was 75 cents a pack. People were buying hundreds of cartons for all their friends and family in one trip and saving thousands in taxes at the time.

Governments never learn. They seem to think they can jack up the rate and people won't modify their behavior.

To put it into perspective, it is like California stating that any out of state company that uses a billboard advertisement is now based in California and subject to corporate taxes. It bends reality.

It does that, but non-reality is a reality in Obamaland. The airwaves are next. Anyone who advertises on the radio or TV will be deemed to have a "physical presence" because the government "owns" the air. The illusion has become reality, thanks to the 'Rats.

Kalifornia also collects income tax from...

Back in the late 80's I worked for a cell carrier that was based out of San Francisco. In addition to some CA markets, they owned markets in NC, MD, and LA. My job was to keep the systems in those markets running. I worked for them for 2 years before I ever set foot in their California office. The State of California deducted state income tax on me despite the fact that I was not a California resident and was not working in California. I was never able to recover those funds.

I use Slickdeals.net to keep me aware of Amazon sales.

http://slickdeals.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9&sort=lastpost&order=desc&perpage=80

I currently have a Prime account at Amazon, and they have a netflix like streaming operation for anyone who does for free. So that’s nice.

On top of my fridge right now I have about 15 boxes of cereal. We keep ignoring the Raisin Bran and eating the Lucky Charms.
I also usually buy maple syrup there by the jug. Diapers and coffee are also huge sellers there.

Thank you for that totally awesome website.

[now I’ll be flat broke by 6 pm]....LOL

I take it that Peanut Butter Crunch got bumped for the Lucky Charm hoard, eh?....:)

I buy books, electronics, computer stuff, vitamins and supplements for both me and the dogs, dog training equipment, DVDs, CDs, OOP VHS tapes of rare movies, OOP books you can’t find *anywhere* else.

Gosh...I can’t even list all the diverse stuff I’ve bought there over the years.

*Most* of the time, they beat eBay’s prices.

I just got another Olympus C-2020 for color infrared photography for a measly 50 bucks with ALL the original parts and box and they go for $70 and up on eBay *without* the OEM stuff.

It’s the cheapest one I’ve ever bought and the best quality one, as well.

I just got a BARSKA Accu Grip Handheld Tripod System for my cameras for $15 and the sellers on ebay want an average of $40.

Can’t say enough good things about them.

[Geeze I’m ~really~ craving Peanut Butter Crunch, now]....LOL

It is rather ironic — Amazon was founded by liberals. Everyone is conservative when it comes to their own money.

Oh Really? How about government, Google, government teachers unions, La Raza, etc etc...

What ya meant to say is if it discredits CA, it just fine regardless....lol
