EXCLUSIVE: 'Baby Joseph' Gets Second Chance at Life in U.S.
Fox News ^

The baby who was hours from being pulled off life support at his Canadian hospital has been rescued by the national director of Priests for Life and taken to the U.S. for treatment.

Thirteen-month-old Joseph Maraachli, who is currently kept alive by a respirator and was recently denied a transfer to a Michigan hospital to undergo a tracheotomy, arrived in the U.S. early Monday morning with Fr. Frank Pavone and other Priests for Life staff.

"Priests for Life staff toiled through the night for many nights, working in concert with dozens of people to make this possible," Father Pavone said in a statement. "Now that we have won the battle against the medical bureaucracy in Canada, the real work of saving Baby Joseph can begin."

Maraachli was on his way to SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo., a non-profit health-care facility open to all children in need of medical care.

This situation was a tad bit more complicated.

I believe 7 days (or more) ago, an American hospital agreed to accept the baby, but needed Medical Records from the Canadian hospital. It has been about a week (or so it seems) that the transfer from Canada to the US has been held up over the transfer of Medical records.

If someone was in an emergency room, and needed care, medical could be accessed, I believe.

Why the red tape by Canada is beyond belief.

But then Canada on the one hand considers it a hate crime to say that engaging in homosexual acts is wrong (according to Christian beliefs).

Yet Canada allowed a Catholic Cathredral to be stormed by jerks who littered it with used condoms and knocked a couple of very elderly nuns. I believe these were Gays and Lesbians behind this outrage.

Yet what was done in the Cathedral was not a hate crime...

The liberal aspect of Canada is really weird, and the laws that they enforce regarding hate crimes...

Whether the efforts succeed or fail, this baby will at least maximize his chances.

God bless all those who made this possible.

I don't think there's any question of life or death here. It's a question of whether they would be allowed to take the baby home. Via The Vancouver Sun:
Maraachli and Nader fought to bring Joseph home to Windsor so he could spend his last days surrounded by loved ones. [...] Although the couple has accepted their baby boy's inevitable death, they insisted that it occur peacefully at home and not by removing his breathing tube, which will cause him to choke since he can't swallow or breathe on his own. The parents asked for a tracheotomy, which would open up a direct airway through an incision in Joseph's trachea and make it possible to bring the baby home.
Sadly, there's plenty of government intrusion into healthcare in the US, too. As many people have pointed out elsewhere, though, if he'd been born in the US, he might very well have already been gone by now (with the tracheotomy, he'd have been taken home to die rather than have been left on respirator at hospital all this time).

Some background on the story:

On March 4, 2011, a jet was standing by to take the baby to the US, once a hospital was found.

On March 8, 2011, a hospital was found that agreed to take the baby but needed Medical Records.

Here is the March 8 article first:

Baby Joseph’s family to appeal, while U.S. hospitals have agreed to take over care

Here is the March 4, 2011 article:

Standing jet ready to take Baby Joseph to any willing U.S. Hospital

Additionally, Baby Joseph has a Facebook page with over 14,000+ guests:

Some sources cite Canada as the biggest perpetrator of hate-crime legislation in the world. I guess that as they get more tiles in their "mosaic," things aren't going as smoothly as when they were bicultural, and they feel the need to pass legislation to enforce the famous "Canadian politeness."

I think if I was beside God in heaven right now, I would be hearing pleas from many, many people about lives lost in Japan and God's help for them.

And God Himself might have been thinking: Why didn't you try to help this innocent baby? It is a life that you can save without my intervention.

There is a lot of prayers focused on the loss of life by something people could not control.

What about us saving lives that we can save? What about dictators in Africa that intentional starve people to death to retain power? What about innocent lives lost through infanticide (very late term abortions)? What about euthanasia (which Baby Joseph is an issue that is being discussed)?

God clearly needs to help us. But we need to help one another.

Off my soap box -- sorry...

All his parents needed to do was cross the border illegally and they could have gotten all the free medical care for their baby easily. What the hell, the Mexicans do it all the time!!

Wow, this statement displays such incredible ignorance on so many different levels that I'm not really even sure where to start.

Why would his parents need to cross the border illegally? There is no law against Canadians coming into the United States and there never has been.

Next, they weren't looking for "free" health care. They wanted a hospital to perform a tracheotomy; however, with Baby Joseph's condition, they needed a hospital that had the facilities to care for an infant.

Finally, private groups in the United States had already pledged the money for Baby Joseph's care.

Perhaps you should stick to threads with subject matters that you actually understand. I have no idea what those threads might be, maybe "American Idol" or some other trivial nonsense.

It is good to prevent hate. That is a good thing.

But to allow what happened to a Cathredral in Canada and the nuns inside and not prosecute the people under hate crime laws makes it clear, in my mind, that Canadian Hate Crime Laws are aimed at Christians.

And if hateful acts are done against Christians, that is okay.

Especially if it is done by Gays, Lesbians, and those promoting baby killing through abortion.

One might consider abortion to be the very worst form of hate crime -- the hate of the most innocent of all innocent life.

I think he was saying that rather tongue-in-cheek.

I detect a note of irony in that.

My rant is not directed at you, but Canada.

I am a little teed off they would not help in this situation.

At least with Terri Schiavo, Governor Bush (Florida) tried to help, as did people on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.

I cannot say the same for Canada about the Baby Joseph situation.

No, they betrayed her. They ACTED like they wanted to save Terri, but in the end it was just for show.

Jeb Bush, as governor had full authority under the Florida Constitution to take custody of Terri. He was afraid of a confrontation and backed down.

Congress had full authority to send federal marshals to take custody of Terri in order to execute a perfectly legal subpoena. They refused to do this.

I don’t mind being wrong. I am enjoying this thread being on Breaking News. Hope it lasts. This is the only good news we seem to have (maybe someone will overthrow the Libyan leader, and that will be good news for me...)

There may have been an intended note of irony, but the remark was insensitive, without any apparent knowledge of this case, and seemed flippant, imho. Not everything is deserving of a tongue in cheek remark.
