Military pay would stop with a government shutdown
The Federal Computer Week ^ | Mar 14, 2011 | FCW staff

Posted on 03/14/2011 8:56:22 PM PDT by ScubieNuc

According to draft guidance circulating around the Defense Department, military personnel would be required to work without pay if the government shuts down, reports the Air Force Times.

That differs from the 1995 shutdown when U.S. troops reported to work and were paid, the article states. But the 13-page contingency plan, in which DOD highlighted which parts of the military would continue to operate if the government shuts down, states that this time the military would miss a payday if a shutdown continued through April 1.

Really? Considering I am active duty...and I've seen the guidance....and its understood that we won't get paid but have to show up to work if they shut down. Now...this is really only an issue if they shit down longer than 12 days...past the 1st. I got paid today...but if they shut it down and keep it shut down...are you SO CONFIDENT that its lies...and that I will get paid in a shutdown...that you are willing to bet on it?

ALL and I mean ALL the guidance I have had from the pentagon and from my wing commander and group commander (I am a Resource Adviser...I manage the money as one of my additional duties) has been "show up...you won't get paid if it extends past the pay day."

It happened in 1995/1996. And right now...there are a lot of people on this thread talking about a lot of stuff they know nothing about. Calling stuff lies...etc...when in reality...everything that has happened in the past shows "NO PAY" and all the current guidance from the pentagon says "No PAY." We received all this guidance from them before the last extension...not from some "left wing source"

As I posted a couple weeks ago on this subject: This doesn't hurt us old guys too much...1 or 2 paychecks. We can absorb the blow. Who it really hurts are our young soldiers/sailors/marines/airmen. They live paycheck to paycheck and will have a tough go of it.

Sorry if I am testy...but I get a little pissed off when people on FR start calling all of this "lies"...etc...when they really have no clue what they are talking about. Now...they may change the rules to pay the military...but as of right now...THIS IS THE TRUTH.

Another way to screw our military people. If you have a mortgage and you miss a payment because of this, it goes on your credit report. If you have a top secret clearance, you could lose your clearance because of this. Many military, like civilians, live paycheck to paycheck. Military who live out in town won’t have $$ for long to even buy gas to get to the base.

The guidance I have been given is/was not draft guidance. It was operational guidance. We received it from our comptroller a couple days before the last deadline.

Wrong. Their work status is exempt. Not their pay.

Many military I know are talking about a work slow-down or downright show up and sit around doing nothing. They’ve been told they must show up. They have not been told they must work.

Yep — that about describes it for us. As a family who is already underwater on a mortgage, we’d be toast after one month of no pay.

If this is what it comes to after 2 tours in Iraq in the last 10 years, 24 years of service, multiple overseas tours, etc — I give up.

I personally feel they’d do something politically first.

Yep. Remember 1995 well. Was a SSgt then and sweating whether we were going to get that check or not.

What really sucks is that now I am a contractor, and we were just told that we can report for work because the military will be here (Govt civilians will be furloughed), and all us contractors will still get paid.

24 years for me as well...well...24 years on May 6th. Looking forward to my little 24 year bump in pay...considering my no raise this year.

I really feel for our airmen. Fortunately...our home is paid for and we are up to date on our taxes (not due til Jan...and our insurance was just paid Mar 1st).

I know there are a lot of people in a bad situation and this will be a PAIN.

The REAL pain will be the civilians. They may be furl owed....and not get paid at all. We've contracted out so much now...

Yep. That was the case in `95. I was on AD then and we still received MilPay. There`s a mechanism in place to keep it going.

The 95/96 shutdown was different. For some reason we won’t get paid this time. Not sure why. 95/96 shows there is a way...so not sure why they are doing it differently but they are.

And the military hospitals and the veteran hospitals will be the first to shut down...

No. Keeping the hospitals open is a priority.

Word is, right now, military personnel will continue going to work, there is no talk of military going without pay, but upcoming TDY trips could be cancelled.

I also heard a prediction yesterday that news of possible government shutdowns would be hitting sometime today...

Clinton and Big Media pre-emptively blamed Republicans then and got away with it. Hussein’s handlers aren’t so confident this time. Hussein must really be in trouble, bless his heart.

You’re in good shape. We made the mistake of moving to DC and getting caught up in the housing debaucle. Now w/ a home we can’t sell and don’t want to live in ...we’re in deep.

Not what I imagined at this point.

Please call your Congressman and demand an answer regarding this.

I have called mine and Boehner’s office. Someone needs to get in front of this issue and explain it or dispell it if it is a rumor.

My son deploys in the next few weeks, they have enough on their minds!!!!!
