Energy: If we drop oil exploration after Deepwater Horizon, coal mining after Chile and nuclear power after Fukushima, what's left? A world without nuclear power would not be risk-free or cleaner.
When Navy crewmen returned from disaster-relief missions in Japan to the deck of the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, it was breathlessly reported that they'd been contaminated with radioactive particles from the damaged nuclear reactors at Fukushima.
A scene from the end-of-the-world epic "On The Beach" this was not. They were treated with good old-fashioned soap and water, and their clothes were discarded. According to the Navy, the exposure received "was less than the radiation exposure received from about one month of exposure to natural background radiation from sources such as rocks, soil and the sun."
What the reports missed was that these sailors were aboard a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, a warship designed to sail into combat. These and sailors aboard other ships sail for months on end relatively close to nuclear reactors.
For more than half a century, the Navy has operated for more than 5,800 reactor years and steamed over 136 million miles without accident or radioactive release.
The radiation leaking from the damaged reactors at Fukushima is dangerous and poses health risks and consequences. But so does the fossil-fuel pollution such reactors replace on a daily basis. These are the "greenhouse" gases environmentalists warn will disastrously change our climate.

I disagree completely. Using all known sources of energy is too dangerous. We need to stop using them immediately. (After this comment is posted) The only exceptions are critical government functions like the department of education. OK, maybe we cant stop immediately but we could raise energy taxes a few hundred percent, except for those that cant afford it, they should get it for free. The poor, Obama and Pelosi should all get it for free, but the rest of us pay more.
My elderly neighbor was a rookie seaman when he went ashore for his first duty in Nagasaki or Hiroshima at the end of the war. I kid you not... he has outlived 2 wives, 2 girlfriends and is living with another who is bed ridden...

And let us not forget someone who just passed away recently - someone who was unlucky to be in the wrong place - TWICE ...but lucky enough to survive TWO atomic bomb blasts.
The individual was in Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, and was injured by the blast, but was healthy enough to return to his home in Nagasaki two days later - only to be injured AGAIN by the 2nd bomb blast.
Obviously, the effects of those blasts must have shortened his life considerably, as he passed away only 70 years later at age 93.

He had 5 kids with his first wife and none of them glow in the dark...
