EDITORIAL: Fire hires mired--Affirmative-action situation is legally dire for FDNY
The Washington Times ^ | March 16, 2011 | Editorial

Public safety is non-negotiable. That’s the message signaled Tuesday by lawyers defending the Big Apple's fire department from race-based bullying by the U.S. Justice Department.

Justice is trying to make the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) hire more minorities even though FDNY has taken extraordinary steps to recruit in black and Hispanic communities. The Obama administration, still unsatisfied, ramped up the pressure by demanding admissions quotas for interim hires and extremely low standards on fire-academy entrance exams.

Bowing to Obama wishes, U.S. District Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis created a complicated, multistep process to ram through more minority admissions, effectively forcing a hiring freeze while it all plays out. In February, Obama lawyers proposed an order for the judge to award damage payments, retroactive seniority and benefits accrual to several classes of minority applicants - some of whom missed as much as 70 percent of the questions on a basic firefighter exam.

City attorneys haven’t rolled over. In Tuesday’s answer to the administration’s proposed schedule, they sent notice that the order setting such low standards is off base...

The Obama/Holder quota stance is pathetic.

Outright war on Caucasian men; this “president”, and the governments that allow these policies/laws, are open enemies of this country’s ideals (as well as many of its people), and worthy of nothing but contempt. I can’t remember the last time I expressed a patriotic thought, or heard any of my children express one.

Fire hires mired

Reminds me of the dwarf fortune teller that escaped from prison. The headlines that evening read: Small medium at large.

Ridiculous; the fact that they are evening using the term “quota” is shocking, because in the past that would be sufficient to make these policies unconstitutional. They would use different terms, and try to sue when they didn’t get “enough” tokens. The fact that being darker somehow makes them more competent is frightening; I’m glad I don’t live in NYC.

They are literally steps away from barring white men at the door from sitting for these tests; they will discount actual test scores, physical ability, even veteran status, to get their chocolate civil service. Our government apparently thinks that blacks & Hispanics are mentally retarded; why else would they have this stance? The soft bigotry of lowered expectations; now everyone (blacks & Hispanics included) who encounters a black or Hispanic in any job can legitimately question whether they have the most basic skills, or if they are simply part of gubmint window dressing.

These legal attacks are probably designed to blunt the effects of the “he-cession” on blacks & Hispanics, who otherwise would have no real reason not to vote against Obama in 2012.

Well I can certainly see why they want more affirmative action hires, they are two of them themselves.

This is way over the top. When our federal government starts dictating hiring practices of individual cities, they have definitively proven that they have total disregard for states rights, a fundamental precept of our Constitution. How many times did Thomas Jefferson remark in his writings that when a government reaches this level of dictatorial authority over the states, it is irrevocably corrupted and should be abolished? What is it going to take for the people in this country to finally say enough is enough and bring an end to this administration before there is nothing left?

Our country came about over a dispute regarding no taxation without representation and oppressive tyranny from England. Well ladies and gentlemen, we are being taxed to death and our elected officials DO NOT represent our will. Is it time for another revolution? Is that what it will take to reverse this self destructive course our government has taken?

Why are there no legal challenges to these policies? I’ve never applied for government work, but the people sitting for them must know what is happening. In Connecticut I thought some white firemen (and a Hispanic one) won a settlement from this nonsense; were they the only ones fighting it? To press white taxpayers for jobs they can’t apply for, or to fund state schools they can’t be admitted to, is outright war.

I honestly thought once Hispanics outnumbered blacks (2000) the support for this legal condescension would plummet; blacks were already vocally opposed to white women receiving minority status (as there was no “disadvantage” as compared to white men), and an increasing number of blacks were foreign-born anyway (West African, West Indian, Brazilian, etc. - they shouldn’t have been entitled to the same “spoils of history”, I guess - but they were - and would usually score on such tests like other adult Americans).

What do the proponents of this racism think we tell our children about them, our government, various races, and “whites”? They’d be floored...

“What do the proponents of this racism think we tell our children about them, our government, various races, and “whites”?”

That non-white males are inferior and therefore the white males must be punished. And the US government believes and promotes it.

That's my interpretation.

I don’t see why we cannot have private companies bid on fire department services, a few dozen coolies would work cheep. And the food bill would be cut in half.
