NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Times says it will start charging for access to its website and for the use of smart phone and tablet applications later this month in the U.S.

Beginning March 28, prices start at $15 for four weeks of full access to the website and the smart phone app.

Subscribers to the printed edition will keep free access to the website and apps. Others will be able to view 20 articles a month for free on the website and see the "Top News" section in the apps.

Newspapers are trying to increase digital revenue as online ad revenue, while growing, hasn't fully offset the declines in print.

The NYT used to charge for content. Now with the tablets on the market the NYT is repeating the same act and expecting a different result. " It is deja vu all over again."

YEA!!!!!!!!!!

That effectively removes their presence from the web, and they can go back to being a local paper.

It’s been a NIGHTMARE with them out there. Let’s hope the Washington Post is next.

Well that will put an end to the New York times website, since liberals want everything for nothing. They’re the only ones who read that website.

Roger that. I NEVER EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER go to the NY Slimes site. I REFUSE to even given them a “hit” to count on their site.

They have turned things around somewhat in the past quarter or two.

Left-wing bias and elitism aside, any business that gives away it’s product isn’t going to be around for long. At least NYT realizes that, and the entire newspaper industry is either going to have to follow suit or find something else to do.

the NYT must think people are willing to be paid to be advertised to.

The only way itunes works is for the songs to be dirt cheep and have long term value.

the NYT must be following the ZUNE model.

Tell them that the online version is made from “green” TCP packets and they will feel good paying for the subscription.

The only thing good I can say about the NYT website is that it has an archival search that goes back to the 1850s (IIRC).
I'm from NYC and while doing a genealogy project recently, I was able to find some family members mentioned in articles and also the obits.
