WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is calling for a comprehensive safety review at the 104 nuclear reactors in the U.S. in the wake of the Japanese disaster.

The president is asking the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to examine nuclear plants to ensure they can withstand earthquakes and other disasters. Obama said lessons can be learned from the unfolding nuclear disaster caused by last week's earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

In televised remarks Thursday, The president said U.S. officials do not expect harmful levels of radiation to reach the West Coast of the continental U.S., Hawaii or Alaska. He repeated the statement for emphasis.

“their only beef is that Barack Obama may be credited for doing something right, “

My beef is that a new inspection process is completely redundant 9and ordered merely for show). These reviews were done prior to construction, and are periodically re-checked as a normal course of action.

As for Obama’s poll numbers, I don’t care. Well, no, if his poll numbers go up, we may regain some muscle in the international arena.

FWIW, some of the complaints about your post are unwarranted, you expressed an honest opinion for discussion. I have no problem with you, I just disagree!

You can tell by his mustache-less beard and that weird hat he's always wearing.

Everyone who's disagreed with me, their only beef is that Barack Obama may be credited for doing something right, and they'll just blow a gasket if his Rasmussen poll goes from -22 to -19 overnight.

The marxist is irrelevant except in having identified, understanding and limiting the damage he may still do before being kicked to the curb by the American people.

He is a epic failure already! The only thing he can do more right than leaving office in 2012 is getting impeached and booted out sooner!

I am very seriously beginning to think this guy is a figurehead and nothing more, and that he UNDERSTANDS that all he is is a figurehead. Really, what has he done since he’s been in office? He has no accomplishments, since you can’t call that nightmare of “health care” an accomplishment. He’s always on vacation with Mookie and the kids, always playing golf or getting his lip busted playing b-ball, always eating ice cream or hanging around with his Hollywood friends.

Zero never does anything he was actually elected to do. It’s as if he thinks of the presidency as some gift he won or stole, and there’s someone else actually doing the legwork in the background. He is probably the best argument for those who’ve said there is a shadow government, since there has never been a president as ineffectual and AWOL as Barry. Even the royal family are less figureheads than he is.

Entirely appropriate course of action.

I agree. I will add that I think most Americans would be shocked at the state of many of our nuclear facilities.

Starting to sound like the oil spill disaster. Shut everything down and “necessarily skyrocket” the energy prices.

Are you speaking from personal experience or just guessing?

How can we believe anything the POTUS says?
I don’t listen to him anymore. To me he is President Mute.

I don’t trust him as far as I could throw the moon.

Their scrutiny for safety is so closely monitored any further inspection will have more inspectors on site than workers!

They are too safe now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live 12 miles from San Onofre and want the safety bullshit to be reduced!

We have 104 reactors, but how many plants? I figured we had maybe a dozen.

“I get the feeling Obama will use this crisis as a way to shut down existing reactors and absolutely close the door on any new construction?”

I doubt it. Obozo always was pro nuclear power. To me that indicates that nuclear power is a bad thing.

The 40 year old Nuclear Power Plants in Japan survived an earthquake seven times stronger than their design parameters. That event was followed by a Tsunami.

Despite these unparalleled events, there have been no deaths directly attributed to the failures at the Nuclear Power Plants themselves.

Meanwhile, 14 people were killed in a New York Casino Bus crash last week. Perhaps Obama should initiate a comprehensive review of Buses and Casinos.

It would probably save more lives in the long run than his chicken little witch hunt against the Nuclear Industry in this country.
