Estranged son of anti-gay Westboro pastor says father does evil
CNN ^ | March 17, 2011 | the CNN Wire Staff

An estranged son of anti-gay Kansas pastor Fred Phelps said Wednesday that the spiritual leader of Westboro Baptist Church hit his wife and beat his children with a mattock handle until they bled.

"I think what he does out there is evil," said Nathan "Nate" Phelps, during an appearance on HLN's "Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell."

Nate Phelps is the seventh of the Westboro Baptist minister's 13 children. The younger Phelps severed ties with his family on his 18th birthday and said he hasn't had contact with his father in three decades. Nate Phelps is currently writing a book about his family.

FWIW, Nate Phelps seems to be pro "gay rights".

Fred Phelps ran for office several times as a democrat.

He is a lowlife in every way he can be.

Hard to blame him considering where he's coming from.

The problem with Westboro is that they take a valid biblical message and warp it into something evil by portraying God as an agent of hate, which He is not.

Yes, “homosexuality” AKA sodomy is a sin, and the Bible is very clear that it is disgusting to God.

But Westboro is evil in how they manipulate that into an evil message.

They are doing the Devil’s work in making Christians look evil. They are NOT Christians. They are Al Gore-supporting democrats, who are most likely doing all this purely to make Christians look bad.

So, do you think Nate will ‘out’ his dad as a Democrat?

Poor kid. One cannot choose one’s parents.

“Poor kid. One cannot choose one’s parents.”

You may see, after you pass, that you do, indeed, choose your parents.

Why we choose our parents is another matter all together...

Thanks Salman. I don’t care how the fake pastor carries on about gays, but he and his followers should be strung up with piano wire for their military funeral protests.

Some are more enlightened than others.

Some pay attention to the universe more than others.

Far too many are closed minded...

Does Nate think his father is a latent homosexual who is releasing his frustrations through irrational hate?

I could care less that this kid is gay. He’s right. His father is an obnoxious ass. Not just for what he does at funerals but also because of what he thinks about gay people. Its one thing to oppose the gay agenda, which I do. Its another to advocate hurting people or jailing them simply for being gay. That is just plain wrong.

The best thing we can do about the Phelps clan is to pray for them.

Besides, they would hate that.

There you go again with an excellent solution to that particular problem. I’ll bring the piano wire.

He's no kid at this point but from reading portions of his blog he appears to be an atheist and secularist.

It wasn't clear to me if he's gay or not but it doesn't matter.

I was hoping he might've retained Faith despite his father.

Far too many Christian churches have a poor (or no) answer for those who come to maturity and face an unexpected orientation. It's hard enough to be "normal" but these people find themselves out of the norm in a troubling way and without a support system.

Some churches advocate a variety of questionable "reeducation" programs (an evangelical's answer), others quietly condemn homosexuals to a life of solitude (a catholic's answer), some shun them as lepers (a jehovah's witness's answer) or join Westboro's infliction of hatred.

It's a shame but not surprising many move away from the faith of their upbringing and fall into the seedy arms of secularism. Make no mistake, however, those "safe" and "welcoming" and "tolerant" secularists are among the most militant minds with their own doctrines to which they demand complete adherence: atheism, liberalism, hedonism.

You're welcomed to the "gay community" as long as you give up everything else you are. I know many who find that price of admission too high.

Churches need to be more engaged, more proactive with parishioners, and dig deeper for ways to meet their spiritual and community needs. Leaving them to their own devices is callous and abandons them to evil.

Caught between the indifferent "gay community," an intolerant "faith community" and an inhumane family unit, it's no surprise suicide rates are high among homosexuals.

Their conduct at military funerals makes them much worse in addition to the whole “god hates fags” message (their words not mine).

The quote, "Methinks he doth protest too much", immediately comes to mind with Fred.

You’re right. To be part of the group, you have to adhere to their beliefs. That is true whether its religion or the secular religion of the allegedly tolerant left. Being on the “Left” is a belief system. That is why it is so easy for them to say that a conservative woman really isn’t a “woman”, or a conservative black is an “Oreo”, or a conservative gay person is sexually represesed and self-hating.
