NFL lockout threatens chicken wing business

With NFL owners and players in a standoff, the CEO of one of the nation's largest chicken farms warns that a long-lasting football lockout would be bad news for a gameday staple, the chicken wing.

"It will be a major blow," said Joe Sanderson Jr., CEO of Sanderson Farms, the fourth largest poultry company in the U.S. "If we don't have Sunday football, the demand will go down tremendously, and of course, if that happens, the price will go down."

Chicken wings are big business. According to Sanderson, wings account for 12 percent of his company's output, and the National Chicken Council estimates that in 2011, more than 13.5 billion wings will be marketed. Of course, football and wings are inextricably linked.

Chicken wings are my crack-cocaine. I can eat an almost super-human amount in a single sitting. I don’t know if I can single-handily save the industry, but I’ll do what I can.

I remember back in the early 90s (I was in the meat biz) when Dominos announced they were going to start selling wings. The price of doubled wings doubled over night. They became more expensive that chicken breasts.

We had a few REALLY good weeks right after that.

I make my own sauce for wings. I’ll still do wings every other week or so - with or without NFL...

Not a bad thing, chicken wings are much better than pro football. :)

Good. I hope the price of chicken goes down due to lack of demand.

I fail to see any merit in these complaints. Every business gets stung when they lose customers. Should we tell them "welcome to the real world?"

I can do without football easily. Yardbird is a different story. Every chicken has 2 breasts, readily snapped up by heart-healthy types, who sacreligiously remove the skin in many cases. I. being the bottom-feeder that I am purchase hind quarters and wings for my family, totally disregarding all medical advice and prepare them on a grill.

I raise cattle, yet find myself selling the beef and buying pork and chicken so as to maximize the damage I can inflict on my offspring.

I start with Durkee's... Boil it down some (boil off some vinegar, concentrating the cayenne pepper), add a little honey and Heinz 57 (the sauce, not the obama State count) to taste. Apply liberally to deep-fried or baked wings. Bake on or hold in crock pot...

Length of boiling, and amount of honey/heinz determine relative "hotness" of sauce.

Durkee’s both Franks Hot Sauce then the Franks people got the original name back.

I don’t like it so fricking hot that you can’t taste the tang, vinegar. My wife uses it right out of the bottle than nukes butter and adds to the mix.

With an ice cold beer it doesn’t get any better with your clothes on.

y’know, it’s funny...but I can remember when chicken wings were one of the cheapest things you could buy. My mom used to buy a big bag of them from the butcher and fry them up as a treat on Saturday night for all of us kids (and usually a hungry neighborhood friend, too). The only chicken part cheaper than the wings were the necks and backs, which my mom bought to make soup or chicken and dumplings. Guess the hot wing craze changed all that.
