Bill limits cash welfare recipients can withdraw (MN)

Republican legislators think they have a way to keep Minnesotans on welfare from spending their benefits on booze, smokes and lottery tickets: They'd keep them from taking more than $20 in benefits in cash. Right now, welfare recipients can use their electronic benefits cards to withdraw much of their monthly allotment in cash. The proposed legislation would require more people on welfare to get a second card to use for cash withdrawal, and would limit that to no more than $20 a month.

They need to bring back the stamps, so that recipients can no longer hide the fact they’re on welfare.

I don't know about elsewhere, but I do know that, at least in this part of Virginia, folks using the food stamp card really can't hide it because it shows up on the cash register display as FOOD STAMP PAYMENT.

There’s got to be a way to deliver aid to the poor without all the scams and problems and using the money for other than the basic necessities of life.

There was - before the feds screwed things up, you had to appear in person before someone at your town or county welfare office and had to convince them that you were both in need and deserving of help.

Only after confirming your situation, and confirming that your relatives and/or church didn't have the resources to help you, would you receive aid.

The next time you appeared at the local welfare office, besides the above, you'd have to show that you had taken steps to get off welfare - if not, maybe the town or county gives your kids to more responsible family members or foster parents and tells you to get out of town.

I had to replace a thermostat in a house owned by the Minneapolis Public Housing authority. I had to move a pipe and a bag of weed the tenant had left on top of the entertainment center. I told her about the stuff and she said she didn't even know it was there. I suggested that she would have a better day now that she could watch Montel and smoke her lost bag of weed.

But again, that just allows people to hide the fact they are on welfare. We need to make welfare a stigma again.

While I totally understand exactly what you are saying, there are actually still people who are ashamed of the fact they need the help.

I know people that do abuse the system, however I also know people that hate the fact that they feel like they are mooching but really do need the help. Unfortunately it is the first group that is making it even worse for the second.

I figured it was more Christian to give out of the kindness of your heart instead of being forced to give to those who are in need at the point of a gun. How can you walk around with dignity if you take that kind of money?

Where are family and friends to help them. It seems that ever since government had taken over the compassion business, that people of abdicated their responsibilities to family and relatives.

Every situation is different.

The system needs to be totally revamped, no doubt about that. The abuse that goes on is horrendous, but because of that, the ones that really do need the assistance are the ones that are penalized.

I know a woman, not yet yet 30, who gets over $600 a month in food stamps and doesn't know how to cook anything if it doesn't come out of a box/bag/can and can be stuck in the oven or microwave. I know another woman who is 68 and because her husband just started getting regular social security, he had been getting SS disability, her food stamp allotment dropped to $46 a month and she couldn't buy pectin to make preserves because pectin is not considered food.

They waste the money they are given then have the audacity to say they can’t afford to feed their kids for the whole month and that they need more.

Yeah, let’s destroy what little dignity is left to those who are disabled and have no choice but to turn to what little is available to keep them alive. Have a little consideration for your fellow man. I’m so sick and tired of this unchristian attitude on display around FR.

If welfare were restricted to the disabled, then this argument might hold some water. Essentially, you are arguing that we should not be upset by the cheaters and scammers because there are a few who truly need welfare. That is a non-sequitor.

I would be quite interested in your biblical citation that names the government as the source of charity.

>>her food stamp allotment dropped to $46 a month and she couldn’t buy pectin to make preserves because pectin is not considered food.<<

How much does she give to the church each week? I’ll bet over the years she has given enough to stop now without anyone complaining.

I have no idea what, if anything, she gives to her church. I’ve never asked, as it really isn’t any of my business.

OTOH, in the case of the other woman I mentioned, while I have an idea how much she contributes to church each week, I do know just how much the church gives to her .............

I know that last comment of mine sounds very unChristian on my part, and I have asked for forgiveness for my attitude, but I openly admit there have been a few times it has really ticked me off -— and I know it shouldn’t.

UN Christian??
The apostle Paul wrote to the churches that they were to give aid to those who were indeed widows, not to those who were “widows in name only”. I suppose you think that is unchristian also? I mean, think of all those poor children.
As for “disabled”, That’s the second biggest taxpayer rip off on the dole.
Judging by what I observe, at least 75% of those drawing “dis”ability have no more wrong with them than general laziness.
For instance, the massuse at a local salon is leagally blind., but I know several that have no more wrong with them than the pure unwillingness to participate in their own support
