Whites are abandoning Massachusetts cities at a rapid clip, continuing well-worn paths to the suburbs or out of state, according to new demographic data from the US census.

...The migration of whites out of communities has also left many public school districts in cities made up overwhelmingly of minority students. In Lawrence, just 6 percent of this year’s public school students are white. In Chelsea just 8 percent are, according to state Department of Education figures.

...The trend was strongest in lower-income communities plagued by violent crime and struggling schools. Yet wealthier communities like Beverly, Gloucester, Melrose, and Salem also saw declines, as did wealthy ones like Newton.

The good thing about "Caucasian American" is that it is an umbrella term--it doesn't force the observer to make a guess as to whether you are Armenian, Azerbaijani, Georgian, Circassian, or Ossetian.

It was a new job in Texas and I was very excited both about the job and the move. I was nowhere as politically aware then as I am now - but even then (30 years ago) I knew that there was something refreshing about TX and something fossilized about MA.

This would be fun for you: Calculate the amount you’ve saved in income, property, sales (maybe not), excise, etc. taxes in the 30 years you’ve lived in TX vs. staying in MA.

As the census data dribbles out, FOX posts some of the more interesting statistics in the scroll at the bottom of the screen. A few days ago, they gave statistics on Detroit. Detroit peaked in 1950, when it was the 5th largest city in the US and has been losing population ever since. However, Detroit is also the fastest growing city due to the influx of Asian/Pacific Islanders.

Well, we all know what that really means. My question is if Hispanics can be identified as a minority group, why can we not identify Middle Easterners as a specific group within the “Asian” racial demographic?

I speculate that if “Joe and Jane Q. Public” (or what's left of them) realized that the Detroit area, for example was becoming “Mecca West” they'd freak out and demand action be taken (i.e. stop immigration, especially from Muslim countries)?

My County had one high school with a higher than avg. percentage of white students and test scores that embarrassed the rest of the school district.

The school system’s remedy was to split the district and bus in inner-city kids. Test scores dropped to acceptable levels and all is well.

Uh, maybe I’m a little fuzzy on the math here, so correct me if I’m wrong, but you refer to the 94% of non-whites as being “overwhelmingly ... minority”, implying that the 6% of whites are the majority. Wouldn’t the 6% of whites be the minority and the 94% of non-whites be the “overwhelming majority”?
