U.S. Postal Service to cut 7,500 jobs, close offices 31 mins ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Postal Service said on Thursday it would cut 7,500 jobs and close seven district offices and 2,000 post offices as it handles less mail and faces greater staff costs and competition from FedEx and United Parcel Service.

"It's critical that we adjust our work force to match America's changing communications trends as mail volumes continue to decline," Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said in a statement.

In November, the Postal Service reported a net loss of $8.5 billion for fiscal year 2010, its fourth consecutive year of losses.

Joanne Veto, a spokeswoman for the Postal Service, said, "We know that we cannot look the same 10 years from now. The mail volume isn't there. We have to adjust to keep up with the mail and customer needs."

She said the Postal Service would close 2,000 post offices around the United States over the next 12 months, while eliminating the 7,500 jobs.

As of the end of January, the agency employed 583,000 people.

The first round of job cuts are expected to be completed by May 31. As part of the first round of cuts, the Postal Service said it was offering voluntary early retirement of $20,000 paid over two years to employees 50 years old with 20 years of service, or any age with 25 years of service.

The Post Office, one of the half dozen government functions actually sanctioned by the Constitution, is being trimmed.

How many layoffs are taking place at the EPA, DOE, or TSA?

This is NOT a racist remark but every DMV/postal cake job I see is predjudiced to black females only. Try calling a local HUD office you will get a recording and some woman is out to lunch all day making a damned good salary.

Our local post office doesn’t open ‘til 9:00 a.m.

Soooooooooo convenient when you want to mail a letter or a package at, say, 8:00 a.m.

I hope they’re on the list.

Thank you. Until the UNCONSTITUTIONAL departments are trimmed, I see no reason to trim CONSTITUTIONAL departments.

Our lobby is open 24/7. You can do a lot by yourself.

I have a feeling because the powers that be don’t want their Saturday service cut off. Here in Hollywood, there are FIVE PO’s within a 5 minute drive (and 10 minute walk) and most of them have the most inept staff ever.

Actually, I have seen a huge improvement in service at my local post offices, plus there are Hindu clerks (probably with Ph.Ds!)

When advertisers ever figure out those flyers they load the mailboxes with don’t work there’ll be even less mail to deliver.

Good point.

The agency said the job cuts and office closings would save about $750 million per year.
BS. The laid off will make more in retirement than they did working.

Actually, if they just did letters, they would fill the constutional requirement, it is the insert bulk mail employees that is sucking the life blood out of them.

That is a great deal. I wish the Navy would do this....lol. They get their retirement check plus 10 grand a year.

For employees in that age bracket, the are probably dealing with children in college. I hate to see anyone loose their jobs right now, but they gotta do something about the red ink.

7,500 out of 583,000 does not sound like a lot. Plus 2,000 offices and 7,500 employees. Most of the places that are closing only had approximately 3 employees. Guarantee that the places most targeted for closing are the conservative areas of the United States. Small “Mom and Pop” type places. That is why this government slashing kick that conservatives are on makes sense to a point but guarantee that they will ALWAYS target the conservative areas just to prove a point and get back at conservatives who want this. I doubt highly that any post offices in Philadelphia are closing but watch out for Wilkes Berra a very conservative area.....

My post office and mail carrier are epic failures. We feel lucky if we get mail. The inter-office employee hate at my local branch is so bad that I’m waiting for a “postal” accident. A substitute carrier told me about it.

Privatize it already...
