The Post Office, one of the half dozen government functions actually sanctioned by the Constitution, is being trimmed.

How many layoffs are taking place at the EPA, DOE, or TSA?

Our local post office doesn’t open ‘til 9:00 a.m.

Soooooooooo convenient when you want to mail a letter or a package at, say, 8:00 a.m.

I hope they’re on the list.

When advertisers ever figure out those flyers they load the mailboxes with don’t work there’ll be even less mail to deliver.

The agency said the job cuts and office closings would save about $750 million per year.
BS. The laid off will make more in retirement than they did working.

the Postal Service said it was offering voluntary early retirement of $20,000 paid over two years to employees 50 years old with 20 years of service, or any age with 25 years of service.

That is a great deal. I wish the Navy would do this....lol. They get their retirement check plus 10 grand a year.

As of the end of January, the agency employed 583,000 people.

7,500 out of 583,000 does not sound like a lot. Plus 2,000 offices and 7,500 employees. Most of the places that are closing only had approximately 3 employees. Guarantee that the places most targeted for closing are the conservative areas of the United States. Small “Mom and Pop” type places. That is why this government slashing kick that conservatives are on makes sense to a point but guarantee that they will ALWAYS target the conservative areas just to prove a point and get back at conservatives who want this. I doubt highly that any post offices in Philadelphia are closing but watch out for Wilkes Berra a very conservative area.....

My post office and mail carrier are epic failures. We feel lucky if we get mail. The inter-office employee hate at my local branch is so bad that I’m waiting for a “postal” accident. A substitute carrier told me about it.

Privatize it already...

you could potentially do postal service unmanned. 24/7 access with vending machine for stamps and supplies. An onsite scale machine with a computer to figure out insurance and different priority rates. Just need one person for odd requests lets say from 9-5 mon -fri. Just keep delivery people and loaders based on business needs.

95% of my mail is ADVERTISING. Why is the government in the business of delivery ads? I once heard a senior postal official say in an interview that a main role of the post office was to support the direct mail advertising industry. I kid you not. He actually said that. Unbelievable.

One thing they could do is stop running those goofy ads with the mail guy telling everyone to use flat rate boxes. Hell, that probably save a few million right there.

Privatize it.

Local Post Offices are a bit of Americana. Would hate to see the one in my town close it`s door permanently.

I know several small town post office with at least two full time employees and free standing post office buildings serving communities of less than 100 inhabitants.

This is one government service that perplexes me. They have the capability of generating an income with stamp sales. I find it truly amazing that I can send a letter from my home in Connecticut to Hawaii for 44 cents, and that I can nearly count on my mailman to pick it up 6 days a week. However, I really think this service can be entirely privitized, there seems to be some mismanagement going on.
