US Likely to Keep Combat Role After Libya Shift
Aol News/AP ^ | 25/3/11 | Erica Werner and Robert Burns

WASHINGTON -- The United States welcomed a partial handover for the Libyan air campaign to NATO on Thursday, but the allies apparently balked at assuming full control and the U.S. military was left in charge of the brunt of combat.

NATO agreed to take over command of the newly established no-fly zone over Libya, protective flights meant to deter Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi from putting warplanes in the air. That leaves the U.S. with responsibility for attacks on Gadhafi's ground forces and other targets, which are the toughest and most controversial portion of the operation.

The U.S had hoped the alliance would reach a consensus Thursday for NATO to take full control of the military operation authorized by the United Nations, including the protection of Libyan civilians and supporting humanitarian aid efforts on the ground. It was not immediately clear when the allies could reach agreement on the matter.

So much for a "No Fly Zone"

Since Gadhafi is now boxed in and effectively a prisoner of the US, doesn't Obama owe him full US citizen rights to be treated humanely and given a fair trail?

It seems to me, according to Obama’s past stances, that Obama is putting Gadhafi through a form of torture by having him boxed in while trying to attack him.

Which means Obama should put himself on trial too.

Where's Gilbert & Sullivan when you need them?

Where's the righteous indignation of the "morally superior" < /sarc> left when you need them?

Where are the protestors, demonstrating against U.S. involvement in another Mideast war, when you need them?

Where are the "No War For Oil" signs?

Where are the sound-bites from Capitol hill, demanding to know why a president is trampling the Constitution and sending U.S. forces into harm's way, sans congressional approval?

Another mess, with the U.S. tangled up in it by a democrat president, which has the potential (likelihood, anyone?) of keeping the U.S. for a while.

In the long-term? U.S. stays involved in the Libyan civil war for a dozen years trying to sort things out. The "Arab allies" reduce their presence and drop out, one by one.

By campaign time, 0 and TOTUS realize they need campaign propaganda, and announce an "exit strategy" which is unrealistic timed for after the election.

When the 2012 election sends the poseur president packing, the unworkable exit strategy is shelved, and whoever the republican president is gets blamed for the U.S. "still" being in Libya in the succeeding campaign, 2015.

And the beat goes on . . .

I do NOT like the sounds coming from the two mosques in Baghdad I can hear from where I am.

Lots of angry shouting, being led by some imam on a PA system. This is happening concurrently at two mosques and I have to wonder if it's going on all over town on this rainy, chilly day.

This doesn't sound like the Friday afternoon prayers at all.

Hitlery came out - an hour late - and said, basically, “Nothings changed. Everyone else is going to do the ‘no fly’ - i.e. NOTHING - and we're goin g to continue doing all the fighting - but we'll let NATO direct our troops”

Is that about it?

IOW, the only thing that’s going to change is that is gets worse for OUR troops.

I am also wondering: WHY this action at all? WHAT does The WON not want us paying attention too? (With this man (and I use the term loosely) you must WATCH THE OTHER HAND.)

For example:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/2011/03/21/2011-03-21_smoke_from_japanese_nuclear_plants_reactor_forces_evacuation_of_fukushima_daiich.html

Cooling pumps at one of Japan's crippled nuclear reactors are damaged beyond repair and will need to be replaced, officials learned Monday.

The revelation dashed hopes for a quick end to the ongoing nuclear catastrophe at the leaking Fukushima Daiichi plant.

An emergency order has been placed for new pumps for Unit 2 at the plant, but it's unclear how quickly they would arrive, officials said.”

Is this Libya action a Wag-the-Dog to keep us from focusing on Japan - and the continued spewing of radio active materials, day after day? Are they trying to avoid public out cry to stop fiddling around - ENOUGH - cap the damn things?

Also, ask your friends and family how many know there was another earthquake Weds.

“The Fukushima reactors at the troubled nuclear plant in northeastern Japan was hit by new earthquakes on Wednesday - causing some crews trying to contain the situation to abruptly leave.

The shocks included a magnitude-6 temblor shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday ...”

How much of what level, hour after hour, day after, week after week - ACUUMULATES beyond acceptable?

And so - Watch the other hand!

Here in Kiryat Arba, I hear an angry Imam shouting something at the mosque near me, too. This is not just Baghdad, and this is not just the “West Bank”. Anybody else near a Mosque hearing something? Say which part of the world you’re in, so we can put together the big Freepin’ picture.

This is not just Baghdad, and this is not just the “West Bank”.

I figured this might be coordinated since I heard it going on at two separate mosques.

Very angry sounding shouting and I distinctly heard the work "Amrikee" once.

It's calm now, but I didn't care for that one bit.

I'm on a big base; I'm sure the intel folks are all over this.

Imam said his piece over here, too. These things are generally pre-recorded, along with the shouting and other noises. It sounds like a mob of people on the streets, ready to kill, but the said streets are empty. We have muzak. They have newzak.

Today wasn't pre-recorded. Usually, the prayer sessions are, but this one went a little wild.

This has happened a couple of other times since I've been over here and it's usually that Iran-funded creep Sadr behind it.

Was your experience today live or Memorex?

Do we need to worry about you?

No, no...we're fine.

We're behind lots of walls with razor wire on top and well-armed US military guys around.

This is just another blip on the Adventures in Iraq screen. It's much more mellow here these days than it was in the insane years from '04 through mid-'07 and the Insanity Redux in spring of '08. :)

Mookie just likes to stir things up every now and then so he can pretend he's relevant.

But, thanks for your concern.

It was a Shiite mosque? If it was Suni, and Sadr’s behind it, that’s a much more disturbing development. Ours was Memorex. Definitely. Easy to tell, because nobody was in the street. There’ve been many “wild” sounding rallies without a single person in attendance.

Those were likley Shiite mosques. Iraq has both. There are four mosques within my hearing - two Shiite and two Sunni. We can tell the difference because they do the night prayer call at different times. The Sunni do it when the sun is setting ("red on the horizon" as one Iraqi explained it) and the Shia do it when the sky is full dark.

Or maybe it's the other way around...

They're slightly off at the other times of day as well. It was definitely two that I heard yesterday. A couple of the locals told me today that things did get wild yesterday, but not as bad as it could have due to the rainy, chilly weather.

The guy told me it was protests against the government, but no violence. (This time.)

It’s thanks to Dubya and you guys over there that the idea of peaceable assembly has caught on somewhat in Iraq, but I’m sure the roots aren’t very deep, and there are rats gnawing at them all the time. Keep fighting the good fight, friend.
