Obama administration can’t wait to sell China all the coal it can burn
Grist Magazine ^ | 24 Mar 2011 | Christopher Mims

Here's a recipe for climate catastrophe: First, authorize enough new coal production in Wyoming to yield 3.9 billion tons of heat-trapping greenhouse gases. Then authorize a new export terminal in northwest Washington to ship that black gold to Asia, where the other half of Chimerica will burn it to power the factories we shipped them in the infinite wisdom of globalization.

This process is called carbon offshoring, and it's the nastiest, planet-killingest scheme of which you've probably never heard. China is just the beginning:

...

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States should block these deals on national security grounds, since "the Pentagon's most recent Quadrennial Defense Review highlighted climate change as a threat to national security."

I hope we’re selling at a good price.

$10 a ton, would be my guess.

How will they get it to China if they cant move it to the West Coast ports...? Which West coast state will let this happen without an epic fight? The enviroloons will try to stop is before it gets on the trains so there is limited risk to Obama and Salazar. Suits have already been filed.

The real problem here is that we are shipping good, cheap energy to Communists that are taking our business away.

It’s almost like a story from the onion.

Chris is not the sharpest tool in the box.
He still thinks AGW is real?!?!

I wonder if he thinks the Earth is flat.
Probably still thinks Piltdown man is authentic.

Didn’t Slick Willie lock up the best coal fields as a National Park out West?

FYI...
Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah. The 1.9 million-acre wilderness was signed over to the protective custody of the federal Bureau of Land Management by President Clinton on Sept. 18, 1996
The monument’s biggest casualty was the proposed Andalex coal mine on the Kaiparowits Plateau., …. the detrimental impacts to our county, Utah and the nation in terms of the loss of 4.5 billion tons of low-sulphur, high-btu coal - enough to run Utah for over 300 years - plus potential oil and gas and coal-bed methane and strategic minerals like titanium and zirconium.”

Actually, this is about the most legitimately capitalistic thing 0bama has done, IMO.

And Western coal is about the worst coal we have.

That it will produce loads of air pollution is without question.

China uses coal more than any other energy source, and China's use is expected to (along with India) account for more than half of the 80% increase in energy demand in the developing world between now and 2035.

We, on the other hand, have more of the stuff than anyone on the face of the earth. There is definite room here for trade deficit reduction, especially with all of those zillions of empty container ships running back to China after each delivery.

(We also have vast untapped coal resources that have been intentionally placed off-limits by previous administrations... labelled as "national parks"... and one particular location in Utah has a huge amount of the cleanest-burning coal on earth. The next President should very quickly sign an Executive Order, if not rescinding the park's status, at least allowing extraction of resources in a small part of it.

Why we sit on our resources, intentionally ignoring them when they are at their peak value, is an unconscionable crime against this nation. Newer technologies are coming... and when they do, the tens of trillions of dollars of coal and oil we have with be worth tens of billions... a loss large enough to have paid for our entire national debt... that we allowed our leaders to sit long enough for it to be worthless.

Yeah, the environmentalist will be all upset about this just like they are upset about Obama giving Brazil money to drill for oil off their own coast,

I'm sure they are mobilizing for a massive protest right now as we speak

Yeah and I'm a Chinese jet pilot

We should use the coal here for electricity.

Windmills & solar cells only work, if run by unicorns.
