The Camp Pendleton unit that has seen more troops killed and wounded in action than any other Marine Corps unit in the 10-year-old Afghan war is coming home.
The 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment will return in a couple of weeks ahead of a wave of other units from the base's I Marine Expeditionary Force.

This will be a heart warming home coming for all of them. No doubt, West is looking forward to seeing them again. He’s made great strides since he left very injured. So, this will be something good for the troops to see, as they have no doubt suffered some very grievous losses during their time in Afghanistan.

With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa by Eugene Sledge which was part of the basis for the series The Pacific.
I've got that, but have yet to find time to sit down and read it (ditto with the DVD of "The Pacific"). My 90 year old uncle - a reconnaisence pilot in Europe - sent it to me about three years ago with the following note enclosed:
"As I mentioned, I was a classmate and good friend of the author's brother, Edward Sledge. He was a tank company commander in Europe in WWII. Ed has been dead for about 10 years and Eugene died about 2 years ago."
"Their mother, also now dead of course, served on the (Mobile, Alabama) Tree Commission for several years while I was the Supt. of Parks; their dad was a doctor - wonderful family"

Well worth the time to read it. As a former Marine, the writing was straightforward and without any the flowery prose of “Helmet for my Pillow” although that book too was a great read. Sledge told the story as I would expect to hear it from a line grunt’s perspective.

Thank you for letting us know these brave warriors will soon be home again. Thank God. We need to keep praying for them, that their wounds, both visible and invisible, will be healed. And that they will have the resources they need to heal and to adapt to life after their horrendous experiences.

>> The 25 battalion deaths are among 61 combat fatalities for Camp Pendleton troops since March 1, 2010, according to records kept by the North County Times based on Department of Defense casualty releases.
Prayers and Welcome Home!

Thank God for true patriots who put themselves between we the people, and the truly evil ones. Praise God for bringing you all back safely, “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for His friends...Jesus loves you and so do we!
