WASHINGTON — The percentage of the nation’s black population living in the South has hit its highest point in half a century, according to census data released Thursday, as younger and more educated black residents move out of declining cities in the Northeast and Midwest in search of better opportunities.
The Rev. Ronald Peters, above, who moved last year from Pittsburgh to Atlanta, said the black middle class was more hopeful in the South than in the Northeast.
The share of black population growth that has occurred in the South over the past decade — the highest since 1910, before the Great Migration of blacks to the North — has upended some long-held assumptions.
Both Michigan and Illinois, whose cities have rich black cultural traditions, showed an overall loss of blacks for the first time, said William Frey, the chief demographer at the Brookings Institution.
And Atlanta, for the first time, has replaced Chicago as the metro area with the largest number of African-Americans after New York. About 17 percent of blacks who moved to the South in the past decade left New York State, far more than from any other state, the census data show.
At the same time, blacks have begun leaving cities for more affluent suburbs in large numbers, much like generations of whites before them.
“The notion of the North and its cities as the promised land has been a powerful part of African-American life, culture and history, and now it all seems to be passing by,” said Clement Price, a professor of history at Rutgers-Newark. “The black urban experience has essentially lost its appeal with blacks in America.”

So their parents trashed the areas their grandparents built and instead of fixing the problem they more south to trash those areas.

Only to point this out...but it doesn’t matter what ethnic group you are...once you figure out that you can afford a house out away from the city (in a safer neighborhood), then you will move. Cities like St Louis, Omaha, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philly, and Madison are in the same path. Over the next forty years...we will all be shocked as inner cities across the US are vacated and other cities become like Detroit in the end.

Well that should cause some disruptions in your plans.
Blacks are moving out of the Ghetto’s for much the same reason whites did.
They want better conditions to raise their children in and they want to live in peaceful neighborhoods where they can walk the street in safety.
The trouble is that they bring the problem with them.
The kids that they bring to better neighborhoods were the problem with the old neighborhood.
as evidenced in Detroit and Chicago.
..... Another way to view this perhaps is that significant numbers within the Black American community have finally decided it is time to leave the plantation.
But they will keep voting for Dems and wonder why the same problems they had up north followed them south.
I hope that you are correct because the net/net of all this would be more purple states as blacks bring Democrat voting tendencies.
If they realize that the reason cities are a wreck is Democrat policies and behaviors then this would be a good thing for the South.

Hey, in the 60s and 70s, they were imported to Madison, Wisconsin by the do-good social workers to create jobs for themselves and they have done an exceptional job, along with the liberal pukes from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, the RAT Party and the Labor Unions, to trash what was the best city to live in in America in the 50s!
Oh great. The Black freeloaders have driven the cities in the North into unsustainable debt, so now they head South, where they’ll be agitating for all the freebies that they voted for in the bankrupt North and they’ll be voting for Black “gimme” Democrats. If you object, you’re a “racist”, of course.

Rev. Jeremiah Wright even moved to a white suburb near Chicago. I bet he hates his whitey neighbors - but moved there anyway.

In many cities, the inner city may recover due to gentrification. Doubt that will ever happen in Detroit though—too far gone. They will eventually have to bulldoze much of it down and re-establish parks (or even farms).
