New Jersey Transit train hits car with two women inside

RIVER EDGE — A New Jersey Transit train tossed a car 80 feet when the two collided Saturday, causing non-life-threatening injuries to the vehicle’s occupants, a spokesman for the rail line said.

The car's driver, Hyung Seo, 77, of Palisades Park suffered a shoulder injury and the passenger, Yoo Young, 77, of Hillsdale suffered head, back and neck injuries. Both women were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel said.

The Nissan Maxima apparently entered the Main Street railroad crossing at about 7:35 a.m. as the train was passing through, he said, breaking a safety gate. The gates were down and flashing lights, and bells were operating, Stessel said.

The train hit the rear passenger side of the car, which was traveling westbound, as the train approached the New Bridge Landing station. Upon seeing the car on the crossing, the engineer fully applied the brakes and blew the horn. The train was moving at about 40 mph when it struck the Nissan, Stessel said.

The train, No. 2102, was headed to Hoboken from Spring Valley, N.Y., with 30 passengers, none of whom was injured.

Passengers on the 2102 train and passengers on the next train, No. 2104, were bused around the incident to a waiting train on the opposite side, Stessel said. They encountered a 1½-hour delay in their trip.

Stessel said the broken safety gate was replaced and trains were operating normally by 9:30 a.m.

**New Jersey Transit train hits car with two women inside**

Based on the headline it sounds like it was the trains fault.

Never bring a car to a train fight.

Yes, it’s never the train’s fault.

Did they swerve to avoid a baby duck?

“The Nissan Maxima apparently entered the Main Street railroad crossing at about 7:35 a.m. as the train was passing through, he said, breaking a safety gate. The gates were down and flashing lights, and bells were operating...”

In the drivers manual I read that means don’t try to cross the train tracks at this moment.

Wonder if someone was on the cell phone? What? Could it be any more obvious?

Based on the headline I can't tell whether the 2 women were in the car, or in the train. Journalists are idiots. But we knew that.

According to the article the driver was elderly, and Chinese, so it’s a terrible driver two-fer. :)

They have a great case against a huge deep pocket entity.

The NJ Transit union.

The driver and passenger were both 77 years old. So they appear to have had a senior moment that may involve being hard of hearing among other things. They are both very fortunate they weren’t crushed. Needless to say if you don’t notice a RR gate, lights and bell, you probably ought not to be driving.
