Actually the bigger "problem" in the eyes of the left is that more and more people are talking about using the students' tests as a measurement on how well the teachers are doing and what they should be paid. This is unacceptable to the unions and they have made that clear to Obama.
Obama, who is pushing a rewrite of the nation's education law that would ease some of its rigid measurement tools, said policymakers should find a test that "everybody agrees makes sense" and administer it in less pressure-packed atmospheres, potentially every few years instead of annually.
So you let a child be passed on from first grade to fourth before you find out from an objective measurement method that his teachers have failed him. Bzzzt! Bad idea.
Obama, who has been pushing his education agenda all month, has expressed concern that too many schools will be unable to meet annual proficiency standards under the No Child Left Behind law this year. The standards are aimed at getting 100 percent of students proficient in math, reading and science by 2014, a goal now widely seen as unrealistic.
Too many cars catch fire when starting, so we just will stop counting them and pretend that everything is just fine. I do have some problems with the "aim for proficiency" method of testing. That means once the student gets to be "good enough" he is ignored. Excellence will only be available to those working in private or home schools or in supplementary programs outside of the public schools.
As a college professor I am on the receiving end of the school system’s “products” and let me tell you half of the so-called teachers out there should be fired for incompetence. Students who can barely read and write who were never taught any critical reading and thinking skills are becoming the norm. My experience reaffirms what I have already learn by way of my dealing with about half of my kid’s school teachers in the 90s. Attendance makes no difference if the little darlings are not challenged and tested for readiness as a requirement for passing from one grade to the next. Obama is a National Socialist idiot—all heil der Fuehrer!
FUBO & FAD
0bama is not stupid.
There is a good reason, from a collectivist perspective, for attendance being more important than any actual learning.
Marshal McLuhan wrote, “The Medium *IS* the Message.”
The government School Collective itself *IS* the message, NOT math, literature, history, or science.
You have to understand some doctors, pilots, nuclear physicists and the present bozo in the WH got to where they are without tests or even going to class. “Affirmate Action” don’t you know!
Pull the string and it says, "Math is hard. Taking tests is boring."
How about this:
Determine where the most sucessful people in every field were educated.
Determine the schools methods of teaching and publish the results.
Schools can adopt and advertise which method they follow and why
Parents make informed decisions about their kids’ education
He graduated because of affirmative action, any testing would have revealed his true level of knowledge, which was obviously zip (except for reading)
Yes, unfortunately I do.
I live in a democrapic area and logic is the enemy!
The Dems want to eliminate standardized testing because it creates accountabilty for teachers and schools based on results. If we are to keep funding No Child Left Behind, we should maintain standardized testing because it is the core of the program. However, I realize there is controversy as to its effectiveness. I personally think the entire program should be defunded because eventually the Dems will eliminate standardized testing and we will have just another pork barrel spending program to benefit the teacher’s unions.Obama is merely doing the union’s bidding in trying to eliminate testing and accountability.
There was an article a few months ago about a DC school. Can't quite
remember the details as to whether the school was going to be replaced
because it needed to be replaced, or just the desires of the local
pols/education cabal as a way to get a multi-centimillion "Taj Mahal" school.
Any way, the local pol pushing it implied it was racist not to build the
school, since by his reasoning, a new school would make the kids want to
come to school, rather than not coming, and committing crimes out of
boredom, thereby condemning the black youths to criminal lives.
So if they ever get a job all they have to do is show up to get paid. Does this guy really hold a PhD? What a moron.
The Obama administration has proposed replacing those standards with a loftier yet less prescriptive requirement that by 2020 all students graduating from high school should be ready for college or a career.
The biggest reason kids are not proficient in math and reading is the liberal teachers are indoctrinating the yutes into socialism. Not all kids are cut out for college, and using attendance as a way to get more to graduate is just another way to ensure more DUmmies on welfare.
IMO this has to do with black performance on standardized tests whether in school or for Fire or Police jobs.

This is the idiot president who thinks everyone should have a college education funded by the taxpayer.
Yeh its boring to actually have to “learn” and “retain”.
So what our schools really need is to hire more Dewey Finns (School of Rock)?
Zero votes "present" on schools.
"Loftier"!? Without basic math & communication skills, just what kind of "lofty" aspirations does BO have for these kids?
Is it too much to hope that this kind of school can prepare them to say, "Would you like fries with that?" Second thought, that career would require them to make change...
But one thing you can be sure that BO and NEA will require is that every student will know all about kinky sex & how to use a condom - preparing them for the Oldest Profession, at least.
Taking tests is the least boring part of school. You have to actually do some work....especially if you have one of the MANY, MANY boring teachers.
