Government Shut Down Now Likely
MarketWatch.com ^

With less than two weeks to head off a government shutdown, congressional Republicans and Democrats don’t look like they’re in the mood to compromise — at least judging by what’s on tap for Tuesday. As the clock ticks, here’s a sampling of what’s happening on Capitol Hill and elsewhere:

Tuesday morning, Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, was set to speak on the Senate floor and blame the “far right” for the breakdown of budget talks.

“Schumer will say the only hurdle to a deal at this point between House Republicans and the White House is the tea party conservatives’ refusal to compromise,” his office said.

> Shut it down completely, including Social Security, Medicare, and the military! Yes, the military. If our military can’t or won’t protect us from the unarmed invasion from the south then its completely worthless anyway.

Buddy, I’m no fan of the government, but your ideas about the military are wildly uninformed.

Keep talking, Chuckie. Forget the last election. Just keep talking.

Cheesey Schemer got busted for plotting his little media blitz. But let’s see if the pubs can pull their heads out long enough to make hay of that fact.

What's missing in the MW article, Headline / or original FR post is,

What's the DATE of the "shutdown" / calendar of events?

~ With less than two weeks to head off a government shutdown... ~

I don't have time to read the thread, maybe it has been mentioned. If anyone has the DATE or a calendar of events for the possible shutdown, post or link here. Thanks! I and others can check back and click "View Replies" to get an answer.

FR Mods / Admin Moderator should "Edit In" a "Calendar of Events" into the original post or the Comments Section of Post 1. THIS should be done on this thread, AND on ALL future relevant "Gov Shutdown" threads so that we can have the best updated info available.

As Reagan once said “Let’s shut it down, and see if anyone notices” - by Mr. K

You know, as much as I want to see the Rats put in their place, I wish people wouldn't forget that there are honest hard working people in federal employment who will be devastated if a shutdown does occur because they won't get paid.

I'm one of them, and while I see the abuses that go on in the US government, I live from paycheck to paycheck because the job does not pay me enough life "high on the hog" as many government employees are accused of.

The little people will be hurt. Don't forget that.

“They vote for fiscal sanity, until it affects them directly.”

Kind of like how the GOP sees balancing the budget. They’re very much for balancing the budget; until they actually have to cut spending.

“...,the GOP and other groups had better be prepared for the onslaught of journ-o-lists who will eagerly ride to the aid of Democrats and work to pillory Republicans.”

Helped by ALL of TV, Hollywood and the newsmedia plus idiots who watch TV. FOX is also covering for Obama.

Weakness, cupidity, and duplicity seem to be the defining hallmarks of what passes for GOP “leadership.”

Oh please, you’re lurking me. There is no evidence the negative pols showing dissatisfaction with Walker were anything more than outcome based by Onada’s propaganda organs. Did you miss today’s Cheese State report?

Despite the bogus demrat/union legal challenges, Wisconsin will cease to collect union dues as of today. And beginning next week the poor teachers will finally have to contribute to their health care costs.

But all of that is not really the issue is it? The fact is that Walker did what was right for Wisconsin tax payers—even the ones who don’t vote. The state was going bankrupt. There was no money. Millions are unemployed and that number is growing. Raising taxes on the declining number of tax payers would have to be catastrophic for them to generate the income necessary to support the public union plutocratic lifestyle. And you’re telling me Wisconsin tax payers are unhappy with Walker based on demrat polling?

Sheeeesh!!!

I am torn here also. The shutdown is necessary to get the cuts we need, however my orders could be toast if it goes through and once we “reopen” there’s no guarantee I would be called back. And I’m doing my best to try to stay employed until I make it to Law School in August (decided to finally go because somebody’s got to fight the libs in court).

What worries me is that once the shutdown occurs, I don’t think this is going to be a quick thing. I see it going on for at least two weeks (or whenever the first scheduled pay period for Federal employees hits). The Democrats will just sit and do nothing and let the media run the stories about how GS-4 John and Jane can’t pay the bills. And the fact that the economy is in the crapper (thanks to current policies), those furloughed employees will find it nearly impossible to find work elsewhere. Of course, when the unemployment numbers shoot up, that will just be ignored.

Essentially, what I think will happen is that the Democrats will try to blackmail America into going along with their budget. The Federal employees may call on Obama to do something, but both he and the media will defer back to the House. You will hear over and over again that the House GOP has “the power of the purse” and that “this is not the President’s fault because he can’t force Congress to pass a funding bill”. I think maybe every so many days, the Senate would try to pass through some bloated BS spending bill or stop-gap measure and blackmail the GOP into either ending the standoff, or accusing them of allowing the suffering to continue. Either way, it looks like their is some grain of truth to what Howard Dean said earlier today.

With this going on and given our current leadership in the GOP, I do not see Boehner/Cantor standing firm. They’ve already had to be dragged into this kicking and screaming. I honestly think if this went on long enough (2+ weeks), Boehner would resign as Speaker. This is because inevitably, McCain, Graham, Collins, Snowe or whatever RINO leadership in the Senate would try to soften whatever the Reid Senate was trying to pass with some sort of “compromise”, putting pressure on the House GOP. Boehner’s then left with two choices: go with the Senate GOP compromise and ensure defeat for 2012 not only for himself, but for the GOP in general, or hold firm and face the brunt as the main cause of the entire shutdown and a media attack that would report “bipartisian” hatred of him. As a person, I like Boehner. But I think given these options, he will quit and let someone else willing to take the relentless attack have a go. With about 170 solid GOP conservatives in the House, they should be able to put one of their own to the task.

Yet, last week at a Tea Party meeting, a US Representative said, and I quote: “Social Security checks will not go out if the Government shuts down.” Is that obsufucation or what?

In my neck of the woods we call that a lie.

The Pentago is already warning ACTIVE duty military that they will STILL have to soldier on WITHOUT pay if the government shuts down. I got an email from Military.com today that had a site posted to read the article. So, troops may be working without pay and retired military will not be paid nor VA disability checks received.

Are you kiddin me??? With no NFL season the natives are REALLY gonna get so restless that they'll all join the TEA PARTY and march on D.C. in larger throngs than responded to Glen Beck's unbelievable turnout!!!

Instead of standing in the door of the school house like the south in the 50's and 60's, they'll be standing in the doors of all those edifices scattered all over D.C. keepin the government bottled up till it finally comes to it's senses!!!

God bless America and my fellow FReepers!!! As the old saying goes... I love my country, but I fear my government!!!
