RAS LANOUF, Libya – Moammar Gadhafi's forces hammered rebels with tanks and rockets, turning their rapid advance into a panicked retreat in an hourslong battle Tuesday. The fighting underscored the dilemma facing the U.S. and its allies in Libya: Rebels may be unable to oust Gadhafi militarily unless already contentious international airstrikes go even further in taking out his forces.

The big problem is not American prestige but that all these enemies are learning quick when to strike and it's when a Democrat is in the Whitehouse. Used to be they lumped us all together but they are finding out, if the President has an R by his name back off, a D? You can steal city hall.

Which is a problem in the long term because the dictators know all they have to do is lay low when a Republican is president, knowing that in 4 or 8 years we'll elect a stupid DemocRAT and they can go whole hog (pun to Islamists intended).

I vividly recall Pres. GW Bush being called a “cowboy” among other denigrating slurs.

Well, we're seeing how the world views us when our president is an unqualified community organizer.

I'm convinced the current administration seeks to destroy our sovereignty and our reputation.

Evidence of how “transformative” Obama’s election really was: Never in my life did I imagine I would one day be rooting for a Moammar Gadhafi victory. But there you are. If Obama wants him out, it can only be that the rebels are even more anti-Western than Gadhafi is. The world is now a very, very strange place.

It'd be funny if US prestige wasn't being frittered away.

There will be hell to pay for this clown's mistakes.

So true.

What we fail to appreciate in Libya is that this is tribal. Ghaddafi’s tribe is the biggest with the number two tribe as his hereditary allies in running the country.

Ghaddafi may have realized that his long-term viability is dependent upon exterminating the opposing tribes. Killing all the men and boys, and distributing the women and girls among his allies.

Of course, that point also applies to the tribally-based rebels as well.

We don’t have any ground troops we can spare right now. And who else is going to step up? I vote for the Chinese.

I hear a lot of conservatives and mainstream GOP beating the war drums for Libya.

Still, I can't understand for the life of me what the hell we're doing there.

And, I have no doubt that before it's said and done we will have "boots on the ground"...since I'm certain we do already.

I mean, what's a few combat brigades between friends?

The French and British should have been told: This is your problem. Fix it.

I know Kristol is in favor. Then again, he’s a “neocon” who bought into the Bush Doctorine belief in freedom across the Middle East. However, I think the last decade has shown the population of that area is incapable of responsible self governance.

We agree to some extent but you are wrong if you think that the Bush doctrine was ever about self-governance. A case in point was the administration’s effort to ignore the result of the Gaza/West election once their side lost. Bush only supported self-governance when people voted the “right” way.

Why not? It works already for the American left.

That’s kind of what I was getting at when I said “responsible and stable.” If the election is free and fair, you have to respect the outcome, but not necessarily the wisdom of the choice.
