Ratings Down for Fox, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck (Maddow UP, CNN also UP)
Opposing Views.com ^ | 3/31/11 | Mark Berman

Ratings for Fox News are in the doldrums, down 21% in primetime so far this year. But don't cry for the right-leaning network -- it's been number one on cable for nine years now, and it still has the top 12 shows.

According to a report from Business Insider, Bill O'Reilly remains in the top spot, but he lost 14% of his audience from the same three-month period last year. Sean Hannity places second, down 19%. Bret Baier (whoever he is) is third, beating out Glenn Beck, who has lost a whopping 30% of his audience.

CNN and MSNBC have been the beneficiaries of Fox's decline. CNN is up by 28%, led by Anderson Cooper's 18% rise, and MSNBC saw a 9% ratings growth. Its star Rachel Maddow has 16% more viewers.

Business Insider speculates on the possible reason:

This time period last year was dominated by the health care debate and for much of that period Fox operated as an extension of the opposition. Now that the nation's focus is international it's harder to figure out an angle where Obama is bad and...nuclear meltdowns and Qadaffi are good.

Another explanation could be that CNN and MSNBC have been doing so poorly in recent years that there was no place else to go but up.

I’m amazed that anyone watches any of these shows, frankly. They bore me to tears.

I agree. I find myself watching Imus or Morning Joe more than Fox and Friends. My wife loves them, but I ask her how many lost dog stories can she take? And that couch does not work ( even if all the blondes have great legs).

First, get rid of that bum, O’Reilly.

Fox has made a big mistake in failing to go with who broughtthem to the dance. Instead they went on a left-wing kook hiring binge, with more left-wingers then in the past.

I have turned off most of their shows for that very reason.

They don’t have mant conservatives aand I have noticed that the speakers on the left have their mics turned higher and are allowed to speak over the others without any one stopping them.

FNC needs more varied programming.

It had a great show a few years back - The Half Hour News Hour - but kept pre-empting it, changing its time slot and never really gave it a chance to succeed.

You're right in that FNC has few conservatives - lots of RINOs (Rove, Perino, etc.) and neocons (Krathammer, Kristol, Barnes, etc.).

Neocons are NOT conservatives.

Glenn Beck has some good points, but oh my gosh, how much weeping gloom and doom can you take?

If the message is ignored then the truth hurts too much. Sorry, but it is the only place where King Obama is now being exposed as a communists Muslim. The links to the communists of America explains why we are in the condition we are in. Beck is a little overboard but his is the ONLY program that is attacking the enemies of America and is made simple with their own words and works. Gretta is really one of the best. O'Rielly is insane. Hannity repeats too much.

You are correct about Greta, she does.

BOR has become the extention of his overblown ego. Hannity has the panel from the fun house on each night which precludes my wasting time watching.

Totally agree. The BBC is good journalism. Definitely a bias, but they actually have enterprising journalists. NPR, but comparison, is absolutely horrid.

British journalism in general is better because, unlike American journalists, Fleet Street is more interested in their craft than their political agenda.

Piers Morgan got fired from his Fleet St. job because he followed a bogus anti-Iraq story. Eventually, he gets hired by CNN.

HAHAHHAHAHA Funny..

They have had the opinion shows in the evening ever since they launched... they aren’t going to stop having them.

Fox is always slow on the uptake with live news.

When Japan’s disasters happened fox flopped with the usual fluff.

Seriously, Remove O’Reily from the evening line up and there is no effect or tears.

between anderson cooper, shepard smith, rachel madow, ed sultz, do we really need that many homosexuals on cable news in front or behind the cameras?

Well it’s a down year but next year during the Plotical Season things will pick.
Of course it depends on what candidates emerge for the GOP nomination.

CNN’s was generally less hysterical about the nuclear reactors than Fox.

But their daytime news sucks.

Exactly - I watch Bret Baier, especially the Roundtable. I would like to see Greta take BOR or Hannity’s time slot.

Oh, and LOSE Geraldo.

"if you say so... I dig Krauthammer.. don’t always agree with him though. I’m with him probably 60 % of the time, which is more than I can say for any dem pundit or writer."

Krauthammer is even more dangerous because he claims not to be a democrat.

"Yes, Sarah Brady is doing God's work. Yes, in the end America must follow the way of other democracies and disarm. But there is not the slightest chance that it will occur until liberals join in the other fights to reduce the incidence of and increase the penalties for crime. Only then will there be a public receptive to the idea of real gun control. The passionate resistance to even the phony gun control of the assault weapons ban shows how far we have to go." ------- Charles Krauthammer

Dig it, man.

Gretta has the best show on fox primetime..

After about a year or so of watching Scott and Lacy Peterson non stop every night, I gave up on Greta. Is she still talking about them?

O’Reilly’s format needs revamping.

It’s basically a week of “Bill and Friends”

Let’s see:

Dick Morris, Karl Rove, Gretchen Karlsen, Megan Whasername, Dennis Miller, Steve Doocy & Whasernamefirstname, Laura Ingraham, The body language lady, and rinse, repeat, ad infinitum.

That said, I really liked the Trump interviews.

I hate it that O’Reilly doesn’t know the US Constitution from the UN Charter.
